rust on metal part of rubber seal

The metal part to which the rubber seal is attached on my car is rusting. I'm talking about the black rubber that seals across the front edge of the bonnet. If you push back the rubber you may see rust on the uppermost edge of the metal.

My car is 5 years old & there's no problem with any other paint. Has anyone else got the problem and had it fixed by Toyota?

Very very common and not a big deal. The paint they used on it when it was painted offline (from the supplier) was obviously crap.It is a bolt on part and pretty cheap. Mine is almost 20% gone already. If early enough you can just take it off and paint it up with some black rust paint.

Toyota will not touch it as it is not structural nor a body panel.

Thanks. Yes black rust paint was what I was thinking. I was hoping Toyota might be issuing a new improved part free replacement. Mine is only just visible in a couple of spots right on the edge so easily fixed.

You could give them a try but I am willing to bet a beer they won't.
Mine is just a tad worse

Mine is doing this too. I blame the road salt used here in Ontario.

Just another reason I'm happy to have stored my car this year.

Annoying to look at, yes, but probably not something to worry too much about unless you're OCD about the cosmetics.

Guys, that is just a piece of metal that is bolted in to hold that seal rubber. If you have ever taken your bumper off you will see that pieces comes off completely, it is not part of the chassis at all.

You mean exactly like I said in post 3? Don't think anybody here seemed really worried about it. Probably will take mine off and slap some paint on it this summer before it does actually rust through though.

Yours is too far gone.......

I suggest you replace it with CF and SS bolts ......

Nah. The paint is gone but the rust will clean right off. Or I may just leave it and let everybody gasp and whisper about the overall appearance under my hood.

The California crowd would just die.
