More importantly, I am sure glad I found this forum! First time I drove an FRS it had the TRD exhaust, so I was sure I was going to get that. Because of this forum I now have the OFH/OFT and the free sound tube plug, instead. For less than the cost of the TRD exhaust I have a car that runs MUCH better, inside the car sounds better, and outside the car is quieter!
The was an interesting comment about the plug in the glove box fitting.

I met Tada San the Toyota 86 engineer when he was in NZ so sent him the following question:

"Hi Tada san - we met when you were in New Zealand.
I wondered if you might answer a question for me.
Did you design the accessories 12V plug in the glove box to perfectly fit into the sound tube entry in the fire wall or is it just a coincidence that it fits exactly?
Kind regards
Paul"

His reply - "I did it!"

He must have misunderstood your question since the receptacle plug is the same size all makes have used for decades.
I am sure he thought you said "Did you design the tube so the plug will fit it?".

The car with the TRD exhaust, OFH/OFT and no sound tube would rock your world!

I may have asked the question the other way around but pretty sure he got what I meant. Tube design rather than plug design.

BRILLIANT research nzer.
An immediate TSB (TechnicalServiceBulletin) for this matter should be issued
to the dealer service departments and an amendment to the User Manual sent to all owners.

nzer ..... I note that you have a 2015 VW Golf R. How do you rate its steering, in particular with the variable ratio compared to the '86?

I didn't really notice that the steering was different as the whole car is really a different feel. On track steering is great but does feel like the Golf rolls around the corners like a high sided van compared to the 86.

I wrote a comparison here http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78034

Where I was coming from is our previous was a 1998 Nissan 200SX turbo (Australian) rwd which had variable ratio steering. Maybe it was also the much smaller turning circle but it seemed to turn into parking spaces between cars much more easily. Even after 2 years with the '86 I am still overshooting. I keep wanting to nudge the tail around with my hip.

All of which has nothing to do with the track work you are doing of course.

I enjoyed reading your comparison thanks. I took a VW Golf GTI for a spin and loved the power & torque like we had in our 200SX but lack in the '86. I liked the interior etc etc but I found it was no fun. There's a bit of magic in the '86.

Sounds like our taste in cars is similar. Pre my 86 I had a 2000 200SX Spec R.

Has anyone tried coupling the vibrations from the sound tube to (for instance) the dead pedal or steering wheel ? The idea is that you don't have noise from the hole but you get the tactile feel to keep you in tune with the car.
I tried sealing a length of plastic tube in the hole and touching the end here and there but couldn't feel a thing.
I tried tapping on the dead pedal with a screwdriver and can feel that through my shoe. I tried tapping on the steering wheel itself and also the steel of the steering column but got hardly anything via the fingers.
I think the idea has merit in theory but any ideas to make it truly effective?

Also, when I peer into the hole I see yellow foam. Is that normal or something I shoved in to change the tone and have forgotten about?

Great Mod

Thank you for your post. For 65 cents my car is better. The engine sound inside the car is better and not annoying like it was before I capped the Noise Tube.

thank god i found this, definitely helps with my long commute. Just some warning to anyone who does this and rely's on engine noise to determine rpm/speed, you need to adjust your expectations after this. First time on the highway and i was going a lot faster than i thought i was :-3
