I had fairly good luck with STI pink springs when I had stock struts, While only lowered by half an inch and not a harsh ride, it tends to bottom out on the rear over bad condition roads (I had to move to the STI x Bilstein springs and shocks kit to solve this with increased comfort). I don't have big rims or side lower valences so there's no need for a very low stance for looks.

I've had Pro-Kit on stock Sachs shocks on stock 18" rims with the Golf GTI. While it worked nicely it wasn't optimal over bad roads. Eventually I had to get Pro-Kit Sachs shocks to match them but the ride became quite harsh (I find most German factory sports package harsh anyway).
