Brakes, Brakes, and more Brakes

A place for us Saffricans to talk about what we take for granted - until they suddenly aren't there anymore.

After my first two days on track, and after scheming that I'll see how my stock brakes shape up before doing anything - I can confidently report that they don't.
Shape up that is.

I now have first-hand experience of what it's like to approach a very sharp, slow corner at 140, and discover that there's fôkol brakes left.
Better things have happened to me in my life...

I need to learn a lot about brakes, and I know so little.

Any opinions, discussion, links to interesting articles, etc are very welcome.

Best advice I received from GeeTee86 was to contact Powerbrake. They suggested there slotted rotors with track pads.
Sooooo much better.

Thanks Ryan86, GeeTee86 and JouMaSeHoes for the Powerbrake lead.
Seems like there's consensus that they're the guys to talk to.

This writeup of theirs about track days is most informative http://www.powerbrake.co.za/tech_inf..._trackdays.htm

Ryan, are you running their rotors and pads?

Had Powerbrake on my E36 M3 a few moons ago... definitely good stuff

Just make sure you get the correct matching pads based on your driving type. Generally, the ones for track only use take a while to warm up and screech like a b!tch when cold - not ideal for daily driving unless you can live with the noise. However, under constant hard braking, they are really good once warmed up properly.

Yes I got the slotted rotors with endless pads. No squeaks and work extremely well from cold to high temps.

+Another one for Powerbrake but also with Endless fluid.

First setup was PB slotted rotors with GT3 pads and stock fluid - cooked. Now on PB rotors with GTX and Endless fluid. No problems.

I think just over R5000 for rotors +Endless pads. Another R600 or so for the fluid.

front only, you dont need to do rear.
Brakes do not need to be upgraded for a NA car they are extremely good quality.
The STD models when going F1 definately need brake upgrade, not sure on High brakes.

Good to know this stuff.
I am STILL trying to find out when this is, but I am supposed to take my car to a track early this year sometime.
I am not going to touch the brakes for now (since it's all one-on-one sessions at that time), but I consider good brakes to be something that needs doing before I touch on more power, and even outside more power, stopping better is a good thing.

Quite agree with the other guys. I had Power Brakes super street on my old Run X RSI and immediately noticed my 86 brakes where inferior. Got an Ultra Performance kit from them for the 86 now. Just need to get them fitted now and must get some Endless brake fluid too.

Good idea, my brakes cooked in Nelspruit after fitting the Powerbrake kit so I've changed to Endless fluid as per PB's suggestion and no problems since.

The strange thing is that the stock brakes/fluid were fine on the same run months before so I'm assuming the PB kit generates more heat/friction which the stock fluid couldn't handle.
