Just out of curiosity, was there a conclusion as to why the engine threw a rod? Tune always seems suspect during low load failures to me but I guess something could've given before the incident

I completely agree with you. I would like to think my tune was bombproof and still stand by it regardless of the catastrophic event. It was tuned at Dynosty by Hal in Louisville via EcuTek for a total of 3 days to work all the bugs out on my 93/e85 maps. Ive never had a better running car. There were multiple failsafes build into the tune as well as running hardware failsafes.

Here is the best synopsis I can provide. The morning it let go was around 5degF. There were a series of really cold days that week as I used this is my primary vehicle to drive to work. I think heat cycling propagated micro fissures/cracks in the #1 rod small end neck. Seeing the track abuse it did (it gets the piss kicked out of it) and being at 380/300 for 30k miles took its toll on the OE rods. I always let the engine idle for 20sec or so before taking off an do not put any more than 20% load/zero boost on the engine until completely warmed up. The day she let go was no different. Engine was warmed up, oil temps were ~190degF. AFRs looked fine the whole way into work with no alarms. There was no evidence of a detonation event. It is my best guess that I developed a structural linear defect in the rod end and due to the heat cycling on that cold morning that linear defect finally grew to failure.

All in all, I'm impressed the stock form FA lasted as long as it did at the power level I was at. I'm just glad it didn't fail on track as that would have been worse. I plan on having Hal tune the new engine and will be shooting for 400whp for now until I can get a transmission upgrade.

Thanks for the look!

Sam

Prepping my intake/fuel setup. MY17 manifold ported to 72mm, Grams 72mm TB, Radium Eng fuel rails, Deatschwerks 700cc injectors fresh from being cleaned and flow tested at Fuel Injector Clinic. So excited to results of dyno next month.

Thinking about running this Bosch 3bar TMAP instead of an OMNI. I keep hearing they are way better tuning wise. Going to give my tuner an option. Would be easy to modify the manifold to accept it. Would only run a 3 wire connector so the IAT wouldnt be utilized. This is a MAP sensor used in boosted Mercedes.

samweldspooru, is that you?

I just saw your post on the vortex and I would like to ask you a few questions.

I am considering a BRZ as my next car, but I'm also considering a GSW 4mo/Alltrack as well; each for their unique qualities and I'd like to get some words with people that have experience with both.

I'm a 15 yr Mk4 GTI owner, so I know my way around the VW community and cars; however, the BRZ is a new game.

If you don't mind, I would like to drop you a private IM to discuss more about the BRZ as a "practical" daily as that is what it would be if i choose it over the GSW/Alltrack.

Thanks. Cheers.
