Nah. I am 100% sure that the noise is cavitation created by 10% ethanol fuel and warm ambient outside temperatures. I can almost make them come or go at will by this point.

The only thing using the cruise during break in may cause is you will show a slightly different wear pattern in a few hundred thousand miles or so (if even that) so don't sweat it.

Has anyone tried using Upper Cylinder Lubricant or TCW3 2-stroke motor oil in their fuel to stop the crickets? Seems to be a lot of positive results in this thread http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=21980&page=9

I bought some Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant today but after reading through that whole thread it sounds like the motor oil is more effective. I put 4oz of the Lucas in with a full tank of 91 gas and haven't noticed a difference in the crickets after driving ~30 miles at highway speeds.

Yeh I used lucas and it worked but it's cheaper to get fuel under 10% Ethanol like @Tcoat said. Seems the oil adds a quieting effect but after long term use I don't know what would happen. Hopefully you can find under 10% near you in Premium. It's worth the effort in the long run for sanity.

As far as I'm aware I don't have any options near me. I've tried Chevron 91 and Shell 93 and neither made any difference in my crickets so I'm out of options there. Can't make a drive out to the nearest Sunnco every time I need to fill my tiny 13 gallon tank. The closest one is 40 miles away at Sonoma Raceway in Sears Point, lol - I'm in CA.

In the thread I linked above, there's a few people who've been doing it for over 6 months without issues and found that their cars were running cleaner with the lubricated fuel, so it can't be all bad...

I am one of those using the 2 cycle TCW3 oil (1oz/5 gallon gas) since Dec 2012. No issues so far/ engine is quiet/ no crickets. Take your own risk in using it but have never heard of any problems.

I added 2oz of Valvoline TCW3 to a nearly full tank of gas yesterday and noticed some results today - engine was quiet on every startup and only started to get loud after lots of highway driving. I'll put another 2oz in on an empty tank next time I fill up and I assume my results will be even better. Thanks for the reassurance! 4 years of it should surely be enough to have proved the safety of this.

I use 2oz of 2-stroke oil per tank of gas, and it works for me. The leftover bottle from the Lucas upper cyl lube fits perfectly where the jack used to be, and is held at enough of an angle that there is no chance of spillage. I have a snowmobile, so I buy my oil by the gallon, and use the leftover oil in the off season. I have a couple of empty bottles from the Lucas product that I have marked at the 2oz level, and just swap them between fill ups.

After a couple fill ups using 2oz TCW3 per 10 gal of 91 fuel, I can say it's definitely quieted things down but in my last 1/3 of a tank the chirps always come back. Not as great of a result as some people have been getting, maybe I should get my pump replaced?

Is that correct 2oz oil per 10 oz of fuel? That sounds like a lot. Don't want to get into the whole "Is it safe" debate again, just wanted to clarify. I tried it at a much much lower amount and seemed to do very little I might try it again at a higher amount if so.

So different gas stations on different days with different temperatures?

Thanks for your post. I just noticed this morning my injectors were REALLY noisy. And this is at 17,000 miles. When I read your post, I realized/remembered that I had filled my tank with 76 last night, at a station in a skeezy part of town. I normally use Chevron or Shell for no better reason than there are more stations near my house. Kind of weird since you say Chevron didn't help...

Anyway, when I refill my tank with Chevron or Shell, I'll see if it goes back to normal...

Any gas with a ethanol count of around 10% no matter what station it is from. The temperature reference is to how hot it is outside. Anything over about 70 seems to trigger it.
So I could get 10% ethanol gas when under 70 and no problems but when the temperature rises above 70 that same gas will cause crickets. Like I said I can almost call to the minute when they will stop or start based on what gas I bought and how hot it is outside.
