the wine thread

I know we have a whiskey and scotch thread. probably a beer thread, what about a wine thread?

I know theres a huge selection of wines to have with a steak, and fish, some people like white wine some like pinot, while others like cab's and merlot's.

what do you guys drink?

I work part time in a bottle shop. The shop's claim to fame is it has over 1300 different beers to choose from. The fact that I don't really like beer makes me more interested in the wines we stock. I love finding new varieties of wine that I haven't tried before. It was from this shop where I discovered saparavi which is a massive wine whose home is Georgia of all places. When telling people about it I say it is not like anything else I have tried. Having said that I have tried 2 different wineries' rendition of the grape; one I rate very highly and the other as meh.

I could get into this. We're down to about 80 bottles at the moment.

Recent favorite, especially with summer on the way, is Bardolino. Italian red, serve chilled. On the light side, but great with grilled pizza on a neopolitan crust, and other summer fare.

I'm more of a white wine drinker when I'm not otherwise slamming back beers or Twisted Tea; Black Tower is my choice of white wine

I want to like reds, but it's difficult to find one that isn't harsh. What are the tasting notes to indicate it drinks without a fight?

I LOVE Moscato, but I'm a p***y. If a bar doesn't have Grand Marnier, Jack Daniels, Yeungling or Moscato, I'm not there long.

Most moscato tastes like cough syrup, way too sweet. I've had a Chateau San Michelle (Washington State) that I liked though.

For softer reds, look for stainless or concrete aged (no oak) and only 2-3 years old. Washington, Oregon, and Sonoma Pinot Noirs are worth a try, all very different. Also, spend more, it usually helps. $15-30, you don't have to reach deeper, but cheap wine can be really bad or OK, no telling. I can stomach Yellow Tail socially but *shudder* not great. Like Miller Light is to beer.

I've had Malbec and Zinfandel that's really smooth but hard to be general in recommending that. A local place has a Zin on tap that's exceptional.

Try a bar that does wine flights.

I generally hate drinks with sugar so no moscato or white zinfandel for me.

I feel like wine is the hardest thing to buy, because there's thousands and thousands of wineries. I'm pretty sure I've had something from like 1/3 of the distilleries in Scotland, but with wine it seems like there isn't even such a thing as a well-known winery. The correlation between price and taste is also much weaker for wine.

As far as whites go, something with a lot of body, not too acidic is nice. I haven't found this in anything reasonably priced. With red, I think I like the ones with fruity aromas more, although the super high tannin wines are good with food.

The wife and I like red wines. We "accidentally" started a small collection. We have about 260 bottles at the moment, mostly moderate priced wines, nothing really expensive. One of the Toronto newspapers runs a review on Saturday mornings of new wine releases in the provincially owned liquor stores (LCBO). We started buying a couple of bottles of each and the collection just grew.

My wife is a big Shiraz fan. She spent 6weeks in Adelaide a bunch of years ago and really developed a liking for South Australian wines, particularly from the Mclaren Vale. I find some Shiraz to be a bit harsh. I really like Valpolicella rippasso, Rioja, and Primitivo.

We are also starting to get into Canadian wines from Niagara. There are some awesome wineries that are too small to get their wines into the LCBO system. A particular favourite is Ravine, which also has a fantastic restaurant. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is superb. Another great Niagara winery is Colaneri. They make a Cabernet rippasso that is really good. Niagara-on-the-Lake makes a great weekend vacation destination, Being close to Toronto and Buffalo, though with >75 wineries in the area that all offer tastings, I recommend taking a guided tour so you don't have to drive!
