Just stopped by the local Scion dealer to get a quote on an AT fluid change. $250. and about 5/6 hours in shop.

you could do it on your own, it just won't replace all the fluid. What I usually do with my autos is I change the fluid twice and then get a garage flush using their machine. Idk if the fr-s has a drain plug and filter in it but it could be something to save some money and still get about half fresh fluid in. The fluid is recommended for 100k, same as Dextron 6 and whatever mercedes uses in their no dipstick transmission.

We suggest and change out our clients ATF at the 30k major service interval. Over the years we've had very very good luck running Redline High Temp Synthetic fluid in our cars. This includes an Automatic full-fledge Road Race car that saw 20-30k of track miles in a year with several 8 hour enduros.
Also anyone who is running an Automatic should be installing an external ATF cooler. Heat is the number 1 killer of automatic transmissions. We like the B&M ATF Coolers you can find from Summit Racing for <$75. Couple that with an ATF Temp Gauge and you will be doing yourself a very very important service. For fluids either Redline High Temp ATF or the OEM ATF is what we suggest and definitely do a drain/fill every 30k miles. While that will not get all the fluid out due to the fluid stuck in the torque converter, if you do it with your 30k interval changes you will cycle through most of it in 2 or 3 changes. -Mike Paisan 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Side note, flush machines have been known to bend the fins in the torque converter due to over pressurization. We never suggest using the flush machines.

Mike, Have you done this to one of the twins yet? If so, where did you mount the cooler?

Same place you would add an oil cooler...in front of the radiator.

I was thinking of doing some research on the 8-speed Lexus IS-F AT since its the pretty much the same gear box minus the 2 gears but then i'd figure the service done on those AT would create quite a difference with the extra 2 gears.

The AT fluid, along with the diff fluid, has been nagging on my mind lately. There was a forum member who changed out both and stated that there was an excessive amount of metal and crap in both of the fluids. Now I know it's probably paranoia taking over, as I don't plan on keeping this car anywhere near 100k miles, but I do not like the idea of me unneccessarily punishing my cars when I can avoid it.
So if the cost isn't prohibitive, I think I'll think about changing them both out at or near the 30k miles mark.
