I don’t know if the weight of the new Supra is known like it is for the Z4, but if not then this is probably good news for the Supra. If the Z4 is 3384 then the Supra might be 3000-3100. Seems like it should have less weight if it has less bells and whistles than the Z4, which seems likely, and a coupe will be a decent reduction in weight over a convertible.

This. Convertibles are not lighter than Coupes, they're heavier. Also BMW always goes nuts with insulation and rubber coating, they really know how to make a small car heavier. 3400 for the Z4 is encouraging for the Supra. I'd expect it to come in under 3200, maybe even under 3100. And I'm willing to bet that 38X hp figure will be damn near identical. |

Not necessarily, although most likely. If the car was designed first as a convertible, then they added the coupe, the coupe could be heavier. It just all depends on how they engineered it.

The only convertables that are lighter than coupes are cars that have odd hardtop coupes like the current Miata, which has a retractable hardtop or t-top like conversion. The hardtop for these cars has to be an add-on shell to a convertible body or not actually be a coupe but a hardtop convertible. Do you have an example to share?

The Z4 coupe was slightly heavier (<10kg) than the convertible, but it was only introduced at the facelift so there was no effort to take redundant metal out of the chassis. If they both were considered form the get go, the convertible would have structural reinforcements that the coupe didn't need. Like mentioned before, it depends how it is engineered. When building the Cayman (also a coupe introduced afterwards based on a convertible) Porsche actually bothered trying to lower the weight. |
