Is anything inside the trans case susceptible to rust?

I'm wondering if anything inside the trans case is susceptible to rust because I'm I need of a new transmission (second gear synchro committed seppuku); the transmission I can get for really cheap from a friend has been stored without fluid, and possibly with the plugs out.

I figure the oil that was once in the transmission would have protected it from rust.

Garage
Yes gears are hardened steel that are verry susceptible to rust. Roller bearing are even worse. Where was the diff stored and what are the average weather conditions of the location? By the coast, in the back yard, I would not touch it. Inland with lower humidity and in a garage probably ok.

It's been stored in a garage in Indiana for somewhere between 8 months and a year
