It'll probably come with a variant of Toyota's ZR Engine. Should be a fun torquey little motor. There are 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2L versions. Here is the Euro spec 2.0L version (from Wikipeida). Keep in mind that the Auris has a curb weight of 2800 lbs.

3ZR-FAE
The 3ZR-FAE is a 2.0 L (1,987cc) DOHC, 16-valve engine that was first used in 2007. It is Toyota's first engine with the Valvematic variable lift intake system.

Specifications
Engine type : In-Line 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve
Bore x Stroke : 80.5 × 97.6 mm
Compression Ratio : 10.0:1
158 PS (155 hp/116 kW) at 6200 rpm
144 lb·ft (195 N·m) of torque 4400 rpm
33 mpg
14.2 km/L fuel consumption (10-15 Japanese test cycle)
164 g/km of CO² emissions

Applications
Toyota Allion (ZRT261)
Toyota Premio (ZRT261)
Toyota RAV4 (ZSA30/35) (Europe and Central America)
Toyota Avensis (ZRT272)
Toyota Wish (ZGE21/22)
Toyota Voxy (ZRR70/75)
Toyota Noah (ZRR70/75)

If it was turbo it would be faster than the frs.

It's also more expensive. I'd be surprised if there is a scion with a msrp higher than the frs.

He isn't a rep, but he's a professional driver for their brand; he probably gets in the loop of information from time to time.

It's true though, especially for the markets like the US. It's all about the consumer and profit margins. Corporations and the stock owners who have stakes in the company want the highest margins; it's about the returns on their investments. These people don't care about what wheels power a vehicle, or how much power they have; only about how many units sell and if they are making them money.

For the production version I envision the Auris with a slightly different bumper to mimic the FR-S and tC. It obviously won't be a hot-hatch, but it will look decently well, and be very practical. It is basically a Matrix replacement for Toyota and will probably sell well if its priced well, and allows people to add the options they want, nav, backup camera, push-start.

I would hope that they come with the LED DRL that the Auris has, and Scion doesn't cheap out like Toyota did with the North American Rav4 where they are non-functioning.

Will there also by a hybrid variant available since the Auris has one?

Well I was thinking more inline with a Fiesta ST. The same power as an FR-S perhaps but in a different flavor. You would be bringing in people who want the accessible fun of an FR-S, but are put off by the low practicality of a 2 door coupe.

Wise words from Ken Gushi. They pretty much echo what Tada said recently about the the FR-S. Maybe Toyota is getting tired of hearing the "moar power" rhetoric and firing back, discreetly of course.

It's mostly about packaging and intended market. The iM will compete with the Honda Fit. So dynamically, it only needs to best/match that car in terms of power, agility utility factor, and looks. The Fiesta ST is more of a hot-hatch intended to best the VW GTI, and Fiat Abarth.
