I have the C6, C7, and BRZ. The C7 Z51 is one of the most well balanced platforms I have ever used. If you pull the trigger, get the magnetic ride suspension and PDR.

You plan to track it.
Do you need to set very fast times or enjoy the car? If you need fast times get the Vette? If you want to enjoy the car and work on getting to be a better driver the 86 is the way to go. Either a JSRC or Edelbrock kit will allow you to not feel like it is gutless in the straights, add an oil cooler for longevity and your only requirements are tires and pads for the track. I sold an 08 STI when I got the BRZ. Bigger intercooler, turbo, exhaust, tune, blah blah blah. Car was stupidly quick, handled great and the first time I drove a BRZ I forgot about all that, they are just such a great driver's car. Some cars just speak to you when you drive them. Find someone with a C7 and drive it. If it gives you the same feeling as the BRZ I would buy it, if not you already own the car you need. |

Are you racing wheel to wheel? Probably not.
Are you going for the fastest lap time bragging rights? There is always someone faster. Are you at the track to learn what you and your car can do? probably. If you are asking "that" question, then you can learn from any platform. After many hours of perfecting the same line lap after lap getting consistent times close to the best in you group, it is time to move up to more HP. It is faster learning and much safer in our cars, even stock. Remember at the limit means you will be taking agricultural excursions from time to time, better at 100 than 160. Run a stock BRZ or Miata to learn then get a C7. A couple of trips off track in a C7 would have bought you a BRZ, well you get the idea. Track days are kind of like golf, every corner is a new challenge and it is played against your self. |

I would have thought the lighter weight of the 86 would have a higher corner speed assuming same level of modifications/tyres etc. |

So, a full racecar 86 vs a stock corvette? Corvettes are not heavy to begin with and they carry a 50/50 weight distribution. The 86 would take a decent amount of modifications to even fit stock size corvette tires as well. A base.....BASE c7 pulls 1.08g on a skidpad.

Mid corner speed should not change with more power (unless you are coming out from another sharper corner and in the lower powered car you havent had the chance to build up enough speed to max out the corner). That was all I meant. Same modification level, lets say stock vs stock, same tire compound etc. |

I own an FRS and have driven a few C7's. The FRS's smaller size and lower cost of consumables are better than the C7, but the C7 is an otherwise well-sorted beast "out of the box".
I vote C7 in this case. |

That's why I was saying you'd need quite an upgraded 86 to even come close to a stock corvettes capabilities. |

An 86 on 215s has the same tire width per weight as a C7 on 245/285 tires...
