RX-8 wasn't the "new RX-7", and Mazda said as much when it came out. They still wanted to do a new smaller/lighter 2-seat RX-7 alongside the RX-8, *if* the RX-8 did OK on the market. It did not...

BTW, wtf is a "z240"? I had a 240Z (from 1992 until just a couple of weeks ago), is this similar? That car has had no real successor as far as I'm concerned, but cars that came closest were: RX-7, S13 240SX, S2000, and now the FT86

The latest Z's aren't successors to the 240Z as much as they are 2-seat versions of bloated luxury sedans

But I know what I can get if I wanted to. If I had that high mileage corvette, I'm 100% sure I wouldn't be getting that high mileage either

Burning gas is just too much fun. Costs me less per month (over a boring commuter car gas cost) than my wife spends on shoes, movies, and eating out, so I think I have the better deal.
Burning gas, in and of itself, is FUN for you? I no get...

I had a '90 RX-7, and I LOVED it. Except that I never got better than 22mpg. When it blew apex seals at an autoX event (the only hard driving it had ever seen in its 103,000-mile perfectly maintained life), I replaced it with a '95 Z28 6-speed. Which was immensely faster and got as much as 28 mpg on the highway despite weighing 500-600 lb. more. The Z28 made great noises, but I liked the RX7 a lot better...

ffwd to now: 1994 RX-7 with a lightly modded LS2 engine = 129+ in the 1/4, and 29mpg on the highway.

BLISS...

The RX8 outsold the FC RX-7 making it the best selling Rotary car ever(by generation). I think what Mazda did by moving to a entry level luxury sedan while offering sports car performance was a good one. For a time the RX8 was compared to big name luxury/sports car companies like BMW or Audi.

You have to consider that the RX-8 was a successor to the FC RX-7 as well, whereas the FD was designed to compete with Porsches in terms of performance. I would have definitely loved a more focused car, but the RX-8 certainly isn't a bad daily driver...

This thread is stuffed to the brim with some of the most elitist garbage i've seen in a car forum about a car that isn't even for sale yet...

Wow

I adored the RX-8, but you're mistaken. Total Production for RX7 MYs:
Code:
FB (1979-1985) 471,018
FC (1986-1991) 272,027
FD (1992-2002) 68,589
Units vs Years of Production for Each:
Code:
Year FB FC FD RX8
 1st 1978: 72,692 1985: 29,543 1991: 730 2003: 60,100
 2nd 1979: 71,617 1986: 72,760 1992: 26,899 2004: 50,813
 3rd 1980: 56,317 1987: 52,204 1993: 6,801 2005: 27,837
 4th 1981: 55,321 1988: 34,592 1994: 5,962 2006: 23,363
 5th 1982: 59,686 1989: 37,624 1995: 5,202 2007: ~18,000
 6th 1983: 57,864 1990: 29,411 1996: 4,762 2008: ~14,000
 7th 1984: 63,959 1991: 15,893 1997: 3,556 2009: ?
 8th 1985: 33,562 1998: 1,423 2010: ?
 9th 1999: 4,151 2011: ?
10th 2000: 2,611
11th 2001: 2,589
12th 2002: 3,903
RX7 production switchovers between generations were mid-year while the RX7 to RX8 switch happened between 2002 and 2003. In actuality, both the FB and FC had a higher production rate than the RX8 right from the beginning... the only time the RX8 had a higher production rate is if you compare early years of RX8 production to later years of FB and FC production. Of course, FD production was the lowest of all (again, unless you compare its initial rate to the last year of FC production or RX8 production after 2005, but that'd be meaningless in this context).

Also note that subsequent years for the RX8 saw decreased production. Based on the above, its total should be 200,000-220,000, however, some reports put RX-8 production at 186,632. It's possible that the attached chart has wrong information for 2007 and 2008.

Technically, the 1st gen RX7 was initially referred to as SA (it became known as FB in N. America in 1981).

Has Mazda ever produced a RWD coupe with a conventional non-roraty engine?
I think the rx8 would have sold more if it had a 2.0L turbo engine.
