Can anyone help me with a strange noise that just started happening this week? It wasn't happening on the way to work on Monday, but on the way home it started happening and my car was just sitting in the parking lot all day, so I don't think it was something physical that occurred.

It's a strange ticking/clicking sound that I'm hearing when coming to a stop and decelerating under 12 mph. It increases in frequency as I get closer to zero mph, so think of it like "tick..tick..tick..tick-tick-tick-tickttickttckt.t.t.t.". The frequency/speed is inverse of the wheel rotational speed.

At first I thought it was drivechain chatter or sounds from the rear diff, as when I'm inside the car with the windows up, it sounds like it's coming from behind me. However, when I stick my head out of the window, it sounds like it's coming from the left from wheel area.

I can repeat the sound by being above 10-12mph and then slowing down. If I get to 10mph or under and clutch in & out into neutral, the sound will continue to happen as long as I'm coasting forward.

However, if I start from a dead stop and try to accelerate up to under 10mph and then clutch in & out into neutral and coast, the sound doesn't happen. So there's some correlation to inertia/deceleration and coming to a stop when previously going above 10mph.

If I stop super abruptly and make that 10-0mph time very short, I don't hear any noises. But it's very easy to hear when slowing down gradually as if you're coming up to a stop sign normally.

Anyone have any thoughts? Wheel bearings? Axle?

I'll inspect the rear axles tomorrow with an LED flashlight and see if anything looks amiss.

I'm going to guess something rubbing/scratching on a brake rotor or in a drum. Does it change with brake application? Hand brake?

Brake pads maybe? My right rear pad makes a similar noise after a bout of hard driving..noise goes away when i lightly step on/drag the brakes.

TBH that reminds me of when I was at Thunderhill, went off the track, and then on the trip back to the pits there was a light tapping or similar noise that was noticeable when I slowed down. Got back to the pits, didn't see anything wrong on a first inspection, and then drove around the staging area a bit and it mostly went away, then the next morning I thought I may have lightly heard it, but it entirely went away. Could've been a clod of dirt somewhere. Haven't had trouble since.

Maybe you had a similar thing?

Yep, it must've been some fluke sound like that. However, if it comes back then I'll know I should probably consider taking action to address it.

I specially like the "throwback" DC decal back when they sponsored Subaru in the early 00's

Well judging from the pristine condition of all the parts the car has obviously participated in many a hard park rally so there should be loads of light.
I mean really? As a minimum take a file to the edges of those mudflaps to at least give the appearance of having actually been driven in gravel and mud.
