This is all tulip bulbs and the greater fool mixed in with math, geekery, and libertarianism. It'll all end in tears.

I know exactly what you mean. It's what got me started.

I've learned that I should move to ASIC miners though. The GPUs give off tons of heat. They would still be useful for scrypt-jade coins though.

The last time I considered something like the Butterfly Labs cards, I checked with a calculator and I could never make the money back.

I can afford to put $2k-3k into it. What should I do to start off right?

The BFL units you were looking at are ASIC for bitcoin. It's pretty much impossible for a single person to mine for that coin now. ASIC for scrypt (altcoins) are starting to come about. The units with a lot of hashing power are not out yet, but will be soon enough.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you buy GPUs now, you have to worry about price markup, power consumption, and heat.

I've been watching a thread on a Fibonacci unit. https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=2702.0

It would end up being cheaper than a single 290X, hash roughly the same amount as the 290X, and require a fraction of the wattage. The problem is waiting.

i wana get in on this but i dunno anything about mining, right now my rig is running GTX680 2xSLI and i run my rig off a small solar panel on a 1200watt inverter that switches to grid at night (or when my drycells run low). I probably pull 500-600 watt on full load.

Anyone got a link on where to start?
