Maybe all the folks who are waiting for the 2015 Twins "refresh" (whatever that is) will find themselves buying something like this when they finally get around to dropping the coin.

And I'll believe that the Z can drop significant weight when it stops using a platform designed for luxury boats/SUVs.

Probably a target weight - Chevy had one with the new Vette, did not quite reach it though.

Clearly to get that much weight out it would have to be using a new platform.

Interested, but ill believe it when I see it. My guess is it'll end up being at least 3100lbs AND at least $30k

The first time I saw the -86 car concepts I thought to myself "someone finally decided to make a modern 240Z". Quite frankly, Toyota and Subaru have done what Nissan isn't capable of doing. Nissan thinks the friggin' Juke is a desirable car. They have completely lost their way.
+1, Agree fully here.

Not sure I'm ready for another Nissan Z car just yet, having too much fun in the BRZ.

Now if we could only get Chevy to follow through with the 130R concept. Looks like the lightweight RWD sports coupe segment is finally heating up, TY Toyobaru! Cars I'm looking forward to:

- Twins (possible 2015 power bump)
- Next-gen Z (2866 lbs. est)
- Next-gen RX-7
- Next-gen Mustang (3200 lbs. est - a bit heavy still, but 5.0 Coyote makes up for many sins)
- Chevy 130R (concept)
- ND Miata (convertible, but I'll throw this in here b/c 2200 lbs.)

The future is looking good.

When was the last new affordable lightweight RWD vehicle introduced?

Miata, 2005
S2000, 1999 (honestly pushing it, kind of expensive)
RX-8, 2003 (kind of heavy)

Am I missing something?

Edit: An I6 and rolling it out next to a 240z the way the 86 was rolled out with a next to a corolla would make my heart throb. If this car was for sale a year ago I would have bought it in a heartbeat given similar performance and price. Phase in the I6 with a new generation GTR and Nissan would be respectable again with a Sentra that could actually handle. Take the Mazda approach. Zoom zoom pipe dreams

2866 lbs = 1300 kg. Japan goes by kg. Not lbs.

2886 lbs has been chosen because they are Japanese, whic means they measure in Kilograms. 2886lbs = 1300kgs, thus the odd sounding pound-age in the article.

I truly think Nissan can do it. They were only of the last ones doing it right still, building their lightweight low-medium coupe (Silvia) until 1998 and 2002 (US and Japan respectively) when others quit in the early 90s.

They can start by cutting the fat in the center console and dash. It always looked bulbous and bloated to me. Passenger is pretty much staring at a 2'x3' blank dash area. I haven't sat in a car that makes me more claustrophobic than the 350z/370z where everything seems to be gushing out at you.

I can see where the GC got their inspiration.

What else went wrong with this? When they have a double din sized screen, then a din sized control panel below it for nav controls, then a double din sized cd/radio with controls, then you have your basic HVAC controls. Talk about not using space efficiently.

I love everything about this car, except the horrendous attempt at making a good looking front end.

If I was buying based on concept drawings I'll definitely be going for the Supra! That thing looks like a retarded Mercedes.
