My version of reality is different.

If you are looking to shave a100th of a second off your drag time it is indeed a big deal.
If you are tracking heavy it may me a minor inconvenience.
If you are rapidly rowing through the gears to merge with traffic you may barely notice it for about a 10th of a second.
If you are driving at normal speeds in the city you will never know it exists.

Think about it. It occurs for a brief period at certain revs in each gear. The 0 to 60 is 7.5 seconds. Just how long do you think you are in that one rev zone? Ya it looks nasty on a graph but that is not the reality many of us have observed.
Thanks for your very detailed and well-reasoned reply.

FWIW, I started this thread because:
1. While researching the BRZ & FR-S, I saw this YouTube video:

2. The 27 ft86club threads on this topic
3. I haven't yet had the pleasure of driving the twins.

Torque dip don't bother me...I don't bother it, I get around it and leave it alone - it leaves me alone. I have issues with check engine light/ignition coils, not with the torque dip. And when you are getting great fuel mileage cruising on the interstate then you should thank the torque dip.

I think this entire thread is kinda pointless. I'd work on point 3 and I don't mean to take one for a test drive, I mean go rent one for a few days.

Do your daily commute in it if possible and take it for a mini road trip on a weekend. The after market have several options to fix or work around just about any perceived problem on our cars, but you shouldn't modify a car based on other peoples opinions alone.

Own one and after some proper seat time you will arrive at what mods will make your ownership experience more satisfying.

I guess most will reply Header or a combination of it.

Personally ...

6. Something else: Light pulley / flywheel which helps to rev the car easier. This means that you can get out of the torque dip area sooner!

Hasn't bothered me a lot as I enjoy shifting near redline. More output throughout the range could be fun though. I'm planning on Ace header and tune. Possibly flex fuel sensor and e85.

Isn't there an inverse relationship between exhaust backpressure and torque? I always thought that more backpressure (up to a point) increases low end torque. I used to own a car that had exhaust bypass valves. Owners would rig them to stay open all the time to have more sound. The net result was a drop in torque initially.

Curious how that relates to headers and exhaust on the 86.

LOL
Image searched "valley rat" for a witty response.
This is what came up:

It worked for me. When you use it the first time let me know if you smell any kind of burning smell coming from the cable. OFT said it was normal but I am not so sure.

This video is actually a very accurate representation. To drive around the dip you do have to downshift or accept it. It is VERY noticeable, especially when your DD doesn't have anything like it. There are a million ways to remedy the situation, and some people claim it doesn't even bother them.

He is talking about the dip in torque around 3500 RPMS where you lose 5 TQ.
