Dunno how much they were, but you can get them for $15k now.

Maybe I just have a soft spot for MkIVs, but I'd much rather have something like this:

http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...51882722&Log=0

and almost twenty grand in my pocket than a new Golf R. I mean think about it-- at $35k plus taxes, dealer fees, and registration for the new R, you could almost have a MkIV R32 as your DD and a Lotus Elise for the weekends for the same price. You could definitely have the MkIV plus an old Boxster for weekends, plus money leftover to use for maintenance (which you'd need, since *german cars*). Or you could have a brand new, boring-ass Golf R. I know which garage I'd rather have...

Idk-- generally I don't think there are many cars out there today that are worth buying new (and most of them aren't worth buying at all). I made an exception for the BRZ simply because I couldn't be bothered to wait another year to jump into something RWD and there weren't many good used-car options that upstaged the BRZ in terms of value for money within the "small, light, RWD, semi-practical car" niche. The Golf R doesn't even inhabit that niche in the first place though, so it has lots of competitors in the used market.

That's understandable. Different strokes for different folks.

Yeah the mk6 was a ripoff imo. The 7 just looks bland too. Idk, ever since they dropped the 3.2 I havnt really cared for it. Why they can't just drop a turbo on top of that engine, tune it for efficiency (can't be worse than the mk6 4cyl efficiency), and make AWD optional makes my head spin.

I agree with some of the other sentiments that the upcoming Golf R is rather bland looking. It would have been nice if VW would have been more aggressive in terms of styling. But there is no denying that they have made significant improvement with regards to power, and supposedly handling is better as well.

I will definitely drive one when they are available, but I do know AWD system in the R is much different than say the AWD system in the WRX. The R is mostly a FWD car and will apply power to the rear wheels only when the front wheels are slipping.

I also don't think many people shopping for a $25-27K FRS/BRZ are going to spend $10K+ more for a Golf R. They are in different price points.

And I'm fully aware of GTI upgrades. My other car is 2010 A4 Avant.

I actually like FWD, it is a challenging layout to drive on a track and it certainly has its very unique driving techniques same as rwd and awd !

P.S : but I wouldn't buy a vw no matter the model XD !

not a fan of the new R. I would rather the model before. It was a hard choice between the Golf R32 (09 DSG) or the 86 but although the R32 is so sick, its unnecessary power and i guess 86 is more reliable, I get a warranty and i can spend 5 grand on the car easy where with the golf i wouldn't touch it...(i wanna spend the 5 grand making it insane)...although i have ordered the 86, i am trying to sell my dads F150 Raptor (imported to australia and converted RHD) for an R32 so i get the best of both worlds. 86 during the week and R32 on weekends? Yes please :-)

I like the GTI and Golf R. Test drove both one day. Golf R has better handling out the door and great handling overall, but the price is awfully high. The interiors are fantastic for hot hatches. That said, the FR-S is a much more fun car with stability control that can be mostly disabled for the track.

Why? VW is poor man's luxury...they are very nice vehicles for the price.

GTI definitely has the best interior quality under $30k hot hatches. That's for sure.

Vw reliability is mixed. They have a better reputation in Europe than the US. The golf r is made in Europe, not Mexico like the gti usually is.

The 2015 GTI will be made in Mexico for the first time (it used to be made in Germany) for the US market. The 2015 Golf R will be eventually be made in Mexico as well but will initially be sold in the US and imported from Germany.

I have owned two VW's and they have been the least reliable vehicles I have ever owned. I would consider another one, but I would definitely wait a year or two to buy one to allow for them to work out the kinks. Especially with the GTI which is brand new to Mexico and a brand new platform on top of that.

Actually the current US GTIs (mk6) are made in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The future mk7 US GTIs will be made in Mexico.
