If present day is any indication, I'm guessing you were weird. But not because of roaming junkyards. When I had my '86 Celica I used to visit an import junkyard up by New Philadelphia, Ohio - and then roam around looking at mostly older Celicas (generally 2nd & 3rd generation) and various other models.

That was the late 90's, and in my neck of the woods, it was pretty uncommon to see an 80's Celica anywhere. So the junkyard was like a museum to me.

Ha! I used to spend time wandering around junkyards too. Sometimes when I had work to do on my car I'd go and take something apart to learn how it worked before I did it on my car. If I wasn't buying the part they were usually ok with it if I brought the part to the office on my way out so they could shelve it to make it easier to sell to the next person.

With these cars still in production the vast majority of parts are not stocked at Autozone, Oreilly or Advance. If you need anything besides oil, filters or coolant theres a good chance you will have to get it through the dealership. I actually think once these cars are a few years older parts will be easier to get locally instead of paying top dollar for dealer prices. The one upside to the dealer is your getting OEM parts.

Cave paintings? Whiteboards? Glass boards (or whatever they're called)?

But really, things should have stopped with transparencies.

I practically grew up in wrecking yards through the mid to late 60s. My dad would hang out at them and drink with the fat, smelly guy at the counter (there was always a fat smelly guy) while trying to figure out how he could scam some free parts. Between the ages of about 5 and 11 I would just wander around the yard and look at all the smashed up cars. Also would look for signs of injuries (face prints in dash, head shaped bends in steering wheels) and body parts or blood. There were a surprising number of fragments of teeth or skin left in the steel dashes of these wrecked 50s early 60s cars. By 13 I was wandering around looking for parts for my own car(s) I was building. I don't think I was or am weird but opinions may vary.

Don't doubt or question it, you (we) are weird.

I hope that includes all the gear to pull the twin behind you.

Normally yes, but I certainly would make an exception for the i8. Disproportionately small midengine driving rear wheels, electric driving front wheels, battery down low to drop the CG etc. This is the essentially the same layout as LMP1-H class race cars. And it has a pair of tiny backseats just like the twins. If I got more money than I know what to do with, highly unlikely I would go for anything beyond an i8...

I see them here in Silicon Valley quite regularly. Not impressed. There are only about 50 other cars I would rather have with that kind of money.

Makes sense as the 'commuter car' if you've got a garage of other toys.

You're in Silicon Valley, commute lane is quite nice when everyone else is doing 10 mph and you're doing 35 mph.

Edit: wait I thought we were talking about $40k for the i3, at $140k for the i8 I'll save up for an NSX please.

I see them around my area too. The overall shape of the car is cool but the TRONish paint scheme is kind of goofy.

This car has low cost of maintenance especially compared to my last car which was a 350z.

Pretty much the only thing I do to it is change the oil, oil filter and air filter every 10000 miles with full synthetic. I put about 30k miles on the car a year.

First set of tires got 70000 miles with still a bit of tread.

Brakes were still 3/4 good at 90000 miles. I drive mostly highway miles though.

Belt still looks good at 94000 miles though I may change them out soon along with the spark plugs.

My last car the 350z ate tires at 20-30k mile interval because of the weight. Front brakes were gone at 40k and front rotors at 80k with second set of front brakes. Strangely the back brakes I never had to change out.
