I hate those 'tunnels' that some car makers put around the gauges now. Here's hoping the FT won't have them.

Looking stupid and plasticky while doing nothing to reduce glare or improve readability?

Give the impression of a high tech cockpit while simultaneously being cheaper than a decent backlit design?

They're intended to reduce the glare and reduce the light that "bleeds" out, but I guess you're right if they don't work.

IMO they're also to stop nosey passengers from trying to watch your dashboard and make snoody comments like "Hey slow down!" "Shouldn't you shift now?" "OMG you're going to kill us!" "Why are your RPMs so high?" "You know your gas light is on"
Yes I know my fucking gas light is on, mind your own damned business!

Hahaha, all this cluster talk reminds me of the story of my $50 AE86 SR-5 coupe....was driving it home (from a friends house who was storing it for me right after I purchased it) and alluva sudden the thing jolts REAL hard and sputters oil out the exhaust pipe like crazy. Looked down to see my oil gauge completely to the left (no pressure) and my water temp gauge completely to the right (over-heating). Now, I need let you know I was going AS FAST as the car would possibly go...56Mph...the engine was seriously effed up, and I expected it wouldn't last very long...just didn't think it couldn't drive 10 miles back to my place....
So I got off the interstate, ran a few reds to get to a walgreen's and turned it off to take a look. Yup, bone dry, oil EVERYWHERE in the engine bay...bought 2 quarts of the cheap stuff, put it in, and the damned thing started right back up. A testament to 80's Toyotas. Here's a pic of it The drivers door and drivers seat were simultaneously held shut /up by a single buggie cord, wrapped around the head rest and to the door handle (not my design, previous owner). Found beer bottles galore in it and about 5 Alcoholics Anonymous membership coins. And oddly enough, it had Saab floormats. Couldn't find a place to store it so I gave it away to a couple of local gearheads like myself....they ended up putting a individual carb'd 4A-GE in it, saw it once at the track. Couldn't believe it was my old coupe, lol. I didn't mind losing the $50 + change on the car. I saved an AE86 from certain redneck total doom. Last edited by OldSkoolToys; 04-10-2011 at 02:05 AM. |
