Hey @torqdork @speedy and @jblmr2 I've begun looking into tire options. Since you all were running on performance tires, I'd like to know if you kept with the stock tire size and a stickier compound, or went wider.

Slightly wider and taller 225/45-17 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11A's on stock wheels that together weigh 46 lbs. (+6 over OEM) and +2% effective increase (lower numeric) in final drive ratio so little changed speedo calibration but theoretically slows the car's acceleration, braking and turn-in response.

Excellent dry grip, turn-in, predictable, repeatable behavior >50°F, low noise and acceptable ride <32 psi cold. Can't comment on treadwear with <2K miles but they're rated 200.

Poor wet grip, expected for a designated "extreme performance summer" tire. I wouldn't even attempt snow.

I got them for their overall good ratings and recommendations from others using the 1st Gen RE-11's and for their asymmetric, non-directional pattern giving the ability to X-rotate side-to-side to equalize wear.

Good price, too. I traded in my OEM tires on Day 1 three months ago for a net cost of $220, well worth the upgrade.

Bottom line is that I'd tread lightly in low traction conditions but in moderate temps (haven't driven <50°F yet) and dry pavement they're outstanding.

Decay, I'm running Hanhook Ventus RS3's in the stock size. They are very sticky and supposedly good in the wet ( I have no personal experience with them in those conditions). On the street they are pretty harsh. Keep in mind that comes from an old man who has become less and less tolerant of a poor riding car. There's a Buick in my future!I run stock tires and wheels on street.

I got the Dunlop Direzza II 235/40-17 on a 17x8 Kosei K4R. I can't do tire-math in my head, but that's the size tirerack recommended. Tire+Wheel weight was about 1.4 pounds per corner less than stock.

I'll be happily putting my stock tires/wheels back on after the last track day (end of October). They're quieter and more comfortable (especially on the mile of gravel to get to my house).

Thanks guys for the input, I've pretty much decided on getting lighter rims (RPF1 17 x 7.5 which should lose me about 5lb per corner) which will give me a choice of anywhere from 215s through 235s.

I think I'll start on a sticky 215s to preserve the weight savings, then go up if needed. Maybe I'll also try some Kunho or Toyo rubber for comparative purposes

I think the 7.5's are a good choice, but I'd start with a 225's. Speedy was the fastest of the 86's and he was on 235's. Don't forget your brakes. As you get faster your brakes will become a big factor in your ability to improve. During the off season that will be my priority.

Nice choice with the RPF1s. In hindsight I wish I'd gone that route.

Hey did you guys get Charles White's business card? If not he's a photographer who does a lot of automotive pics. Needless to say he was at the our event. Check out his website, cwhitephoto.zenfolio.com, there are a bunch of pics of all of us. I'm thinking about getting the one with Speedy, Torkdorq, and I at the end of the back straight.

Curious how much, if any, oil everyone used at track days? I noticed mine uses ½ qt. of Toyota branded 0W-20 synthetic per track day. Nothing that I'd call unusual at all, just wonder what other's experience is and what brand/weight of oil you're using? It doesn't use any during normal operation between changes and change oil and OEM filter after every track day.

I used Toyota 0W-20, and it doe not appear to have burned off very much at all (at least not perceptible on the dipstick)

I suppose with <2K miles the rings are still seating.

I'm running a 200 mile TSD rally the long way around, up and down Mt. Hood on paved forest roads today. I'll check consumption tomorrow.
