New to manual driving, shifting isn't that smooth
So i've been driving manual for almost a year now but thats not my problem. My fr-s is my first manual car and i haven't really driven many others. So my question is, is it normal for the gears to not be super smooth when shifting in? I mean i don't have to force it in, but is it normal for it to literally kind of click into gear when I'm shifting up? My buddy let my drive his 2015 wrx the other day and that thing shifted like a knife through butter. Same with my other buddies s2k.

But in any event, it should just be one notch going into any gear. If you have multiple notches (i.e., stick in a box of rocks), your syncros may need to be replaced.

^^^i concure and its pretty common and well known. Some call it notchy, toyota calls it positive engagement. I personally like it, other than the occasional 5th gear syncro grind some of us are getting now around 10k miles. Once you have a few thousand on it, put some good fluid in it. I use amsoil gear lube.

I'm sure his tranny is fine. Gotta use smooth movements on the clutch and shifting. Yes, certain trannys are smoother than others. It could also be your driving position, is your leg comfortable when you compress the clutch all the way?
We could sit here all day and say this and that, but the only way to get better ins practice. Self conscious practice, take note of everything. Learning some technical knowledge on the manual transmission and the clutch it self could improve your shifting as well.

Put a weighted shift knob on it. I have a Raceseng Ashiko and it is a world of difference from stock. Their Slammer know is nice too. Though after being used to a short shifter notchy feel i'm probably going to re-install one again with the weighted knob

Yep lol. Would shifter bushings or tranny mount bushings effect this notching in the shift pattern?
