Sounds a lot like another Subaru...

Which is exactly why Subaru would never willingly allow this to happen without receiving something substantial in return. And since all 86s are built in Subaru factories this won't happen unless Toyota does all of this on their own.

Definitely not going to happen this generation but if Toyota and Subaru go their separate ways for the next gen model then maybe.

I imagine Subaru doesn't want to build it because the extra weight of the bracing in a convertible version of this car would result even more whining than the lack of power in the current version does.

Seems Subaru engineers wanted nothing to do with this venture and didn't come around until Tada's team came up with a proof of concept. Keep in mind Toyota has a 16.5%* stake in Fuji Heavy Industry (Subaru's parent). 16.5% is fairly substantial but I suppose not enough to make Subaru feel subservient to Toyota judging by Fuji Heavy Industries' President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga response in 11/2013 that there will be no convertible 86/BRZ/FR-S if they don't build it. Vice President of Scion Doug Murtha feels that Subaru isn't inclined to make it because “When you look at their global volume relative to our global volume, convert that to (Subaru's potential share of the convertible segment), and it’s probably more in Toyota’s interest to pursue a vehicle like that,”

P.S. what's up with Subaru not building Camrys at their Indiana plant in favor of building more Imprezas (http://www.autonews.com/article/2013...na-reports-say)?

(edit: dnieves beat me to it)

http://www.fhi.co.jp/english/ir/share_info/share.html

As dnieves correctly pointed out Toyota currently owns 16.48% of Fuji Heavy Industries the parent company of Subaru. That makes them the single largest shareholder but not enough to force Subaru to do anything against their will.

My Google News thing is popping up a lot of recent articles about it.

http://www.complex.com/rides/2014/05...an-convertible

It seems like maybe Toyota is going to take it from here? Can they just create these versions without suburus permission? Also could certainly be smoke but there is a lot of design work on that topples version done already.

Question:

Suppose Toyota made the FR-S/86 themselves in the USA, would you be more or less inclined to buy one that's American assembled (no cars are fully made in one country)?

Personally, I like having Japanese cars from Japan (FR-S & tC) but there's nothing that really made them more special than my Civic Si from Canada (not the US but still North America). What difference does it make if they're mostly assembled & painted by robots anyway on this continent or another?

It's not like me liking the new 2015 Mustang a lot but afraid it order one because it may suffer quality & reliability issues since it's still just a Ford.

Interesting article:

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2...s-in-2012.html

It's from a few years ago, but it shows that every car companies has their problems, and perception and reality sometimes aren't quite the same....

Don't get my hopes up, Toyota. I won't invest myself emotionally until it's certain.
