Fortunately after 700-800km the exhaust note improved markedly. I guess it just had to be 'burnt in'. All of the raspiness has gone and it has a nice roar now, but the rattly acceleration persisted.

I suspected the rattliness might be coming from the 'noise generator' so I plugged it with a simple foam ear plug and... WOW! What a difference.

Now the cabin is so much quieter and the exhaust has a nice roar when you accelerate, and sounds like what I expected a new sports car to sound like.

That 'noise generator' is ridiculous! It doesn't sound anything like a motor - just some rattling diaphragm. Why bother?
Where is the noise generator? Can you take a pic?

The actual generator is under the hood at the front of the engine bay. A black plastic box beside the air filter box. There is a tube that goes all the way to the firewall and into the cabin. Others in this thread have described where it exits. Passenger side footwell under the top of the carpet or in my*RHD model it's just below the steering column.

A vibrating diaphragm in the box is excited by the induction pressure as you accelerate to create the noise. Just like a*Kazoo (if you know what that is) or humming against paper wrapped over a comb. There are no gases or fumes passed through the pipe.

That is why it sounds nothing like a motor/exhaust but rather a vibrating piece of plastic!

There are about 1,000 pics that come up with a Google search
