Powering the new Z4 will be a choice of BMW's latest turbocharged petrol engines. The Z4 sDrive30i will get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces about 248bhp, while more powerful variants will likely get a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder, shared with the M240i, producing about 335bhp.

Both engines will come with standard rear-wheel drive and a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Z4 shares parts with the upcoming Toyota Supra, and is similarly expected to be offered with a hybrid drivetrain. Such a drivetrain would likely come with four-wheel drive.

BMW's decision to equip the Z4 with the same rear axle as the M3 and M4 rear suggests its hardware will be compatible with the 425bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six-engine of those models, or the 365bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder powerplant from the M2, along with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

This car would be badged as an M model and therefore get its own bespoke bodywork and a more focused chassis set-up.

It's the sixth time we’ve seen the new model in the metal since its arrival was announced by BMW in 2015. The soft-top, two-door model is expected to be revealed later this year before sales kick-off in 2018.

The car's relation to the Toyota Supra comes as part of Toyota and BMW's decision to co-develop a new sports car platform.

While the BMW will be a convertible, the Toyota will be a spiritual successor to the Supra and as such will wear a hard top, as shown by spotted development cars.

I thought it was Randy Pobst, as someone in the SupraMkV forum noted.
It does look more and more like this mule has a ton of cladding to hide the true lines.
The space between the door and the rear wheel well almost makes it look like that rear intake/vent is lurking underneath some fake panels.

A chop of the prototypes's rear with the humps removed, and a comparison with the concept.

I'm glad we are getting a better look at the final sheet metal. Unfortunately, there is so much disappointment incoming. A lot of people are still hanging onto the FT-1 as a reference point for the final spec of the car. Besides the general shape - sans the swoopy sides - the final car is looking to have much simpler detailing.

It is looking much closer to a softer version of what Jalopnik posted back in 2016, which some people had a minor shit-fit over.

I don't think the side profile of that rendering is accurate at all. The prototype shows nice round hips and body lines and creases on the doors and fenders. I also think there is an air vent being hidden by the a camo panel that is drilled onto the doors.

This is better rendering IMO.

I agree that it has more hip. But I'm not sold on there being an air vent behind the doors, or there being more lines. I think the fender vent is spot on.

Obviously there is a lot of padding! If I am betting money, then my money is on a relatively sedative design overall, and the sheet metal will not be too crazy to help keep costs in check.

There is a panel drilled onto the door and side skirts; we'll just have to wait and see what it is hiding. Yes, I do agree there will be an air vents on the fenders. We also have to keep in mind that Jalopnik used the first prototype as the base for their rendering. Hopefully we will get a better idea in a few months at Tokyo.

I don't see anything about the Toyota J29 from F80.bimmerpost....

I wouldn't treat this as an official info /press release. There are a lot of people on that forum that claim to be insiders or employees of BMW. Idk who or what to believe anymore.

Ohh, I even downloaded that booklet and still managed to miss it. Thanks!

The BMW engines wouldn't be surprising. That has been speculated about plenty, and would save engineering costs to standardize the powertrains.

The bombshell would be ff it really is auto only. If the BMW does get the manual, but the Supra doesn't, then I think we have confirmation of a hybrid powertrain. .
