Yes most families got by just fine with a small car a couple of decades ago.

Decades ago they didn't have strict laws like now.

The issues is for the first 1-2 years (depending on the size of the child) you must by law have the baby seat rear facing. That leaves zero room for my wife and there is no room behind my drivers seat for her to sit in.

Afterwards, a front facing seat still leads to issues such as not being comfortable to access the child. Sure others do it, but I don't want to deal with the hassle personally.

Our kid is almost two, and has survived just fine in mine... if you get one of the convertible 4 in 1 seats to use rear facing you'll need a HUGE car if you want anyone to sit in front of the kid. Just for fun we tried to put the convertible seat into my wife's old camry in the rear facing mode before it was traded in and the front seat had to be all the way forward to not have the baby seat touch the front seat. If you get a dedicated infant seat someone can definitely sit in front. Now that our little guy is front facing there's tons of room.

I actually find it easier to put him in my car than my wife's corolla now that he's front facing, and we have identical seats in both cars. In my car I can roll the passenger seat forward and squat in front of the baby seat. In the corolla you have to awkwardly reach over the baby seat.

Unless you're going to a significantly bigger car/van, 4 doors won't really improve the space much at all. Definitely take the seat(s) with you when you go car shopping.

Just put the Graco 4ever 4 in 1 convertible car seat in mine. It fits but it took some muscle to make sure it was secured.

Now that he's forward facing, we have evenflo symphony's (one per car). They will do rear facing, but even in the old Camry there wasn't enough space for that and anyone in the front seat.

When he was rear facing we used a graco snugride 35 (and have the whole stroller system to go with it)

Using it without the quick click base frees up a few inches more space, but you have to run the seat belt through it every time.

Don't get me wrong, with the infant seat if your passenger is 6' tall they'll be really uncomfortable, but if they're around 5'6" or shorter they should be comfy.

Again I'll mention, it's in mint condition, never winter driven....even now it's sleeping inside the garage
