Transmission whining noise, don't believe it's the throwout bearing.
First off, first time poster, long time lurker here so hello all!
I own a 2014 FR-S, bought it last July at 21,600 miles, currently at 32,500. Around late November, early December when it started getting cold, I began noticing a whining sound coming from the transmission on startup. Here's the important details: - Loudest on cold start, in neutral, with clutch out. - Pressing in the clutch greatly lessens it, if not completely eliminates it. - Most noticeable through 3500 RPM in first and second gear, slightly noticeable in third. - It appears to almost completely disappear once its warmed up. - When revving in neutral, clutch out, it whines, getting louder with RPM. If I push the clutch in a rev, there's no whining. It almost sounds like straight-cut gear whine or supercharger whine. As far as I can recall, it didn't make this noise over the summer and only started once the weather cooled off. However, since I began noticing it, it has started to get ever so slightly louder and has expanded into third and fourth gear when cold. I browsed through many of the throwout bearing noise related threads and had a hard time finding anything that matched what I'm hearing. Because it goes away when pushing the clutch in and happens while driving, I suspect it could be the input shaft bearing rather than the TOB. Has anyone else ran into this noise or am I wrong and is it the infamous TOB? |

Any mods? Any work done before the noise started?

Cold transmission oil doesn't work as well... Has it ever been changed?

Mine whines in the cold, fairly pronounced at first and disappears after it's warmed up. Done it since new. I believe it's normal

No mods yet, stock af. Only thing I've done apart from an oil change was the tranny oil at 25,000 with Redline MT90. |

almost 16K, but I bought it new in february 2017 and it was doing it in the cold weather even then. I confirmed it was normal with a few other owners.

Perfect, won't worry too much about it anymore then. Mine probably has been making it since I bought as well, most likely just didn't notice until I really started listening for it. Realllllyyy don't wanna shell out extra cash for repairs that could be better spent on headers, exhaust and coils.

I run the bushing inserts for the diff carrier and it's a lot louder whine than stock. It could be the bushings being stiff when cold making out easier to notice... Keep an ear on it, but it probably is just the normal noise.
