Their cars are all awd, so their transmissions are all basically fwd with a rwd extension, not like a real rwd. Neither Subaru or Toyota have a rwd transmission that take that kind of torque. They would have to go with the next level up aisin which is more expensive and weighs 60 more lbs. Then they have to get beefier everything in the drivetrain, including those worthless axles ( again, because fwd based awd those rear axles only see half the torque at max for their other cars). At the end of the day you are going to end up with like a >30K >3100 lb car like the similar dimension 370z that has to compete in a pretty competitive market segment against the dominant mustang and camaro.

This concept car has absolutely no chance of being anything. If so, they wouldn't have put in a gt300 freaking RACE CAR engine in that's probably rated for like 100 hours or something at 450hp
I wish people would not post about stuff they obviously have no knowledge of.

Subaru uses a symmetrical AWD. Its not a FWD system. Some of their models have a FWD bias, some models have a 50/50 split and yes, can send 100% of torque to either axle. The STi model even has a user selectable torque distribution knob!

Wanna know how I know that you know nothing about Subaru?

Subaru's and Audi's transmissions were designed from the ground up as AWD; they're not FWD with an afterthought driveshaft. Look at any of their AWD transmissions and it's pretty obvious. If anything, they're RWD transmissions with integrated center and front differentials. There are kits designed to convert STI transmissions to RWD, and it's as simple as replacing the center diff's front output shaft with a spool.

You are 100% wrong.

Why do they keep coming out with concepts that have no additional power, beyond the one concept with a GT300 racing engine? Subaru has built their reputation on turbocharged flat four engines since the first model WRX back in 1990-something. And they have a history of limited run, higher performance vehicles, with all the type-Rs, type-RAs, S201-4, R205, 330S, 380S, etc... What is so difficult about making a BRZ type Something with a turbo in it?

If they do it they'll only be restricted to singular markets just like all the other limited editions you just mentioned. It's a losing money prospect for subaru for every car built. For a company of their size, they can't afford to build up additional inventory of those type of cars. The majority of people completely underestimate the cost to redevelop and retool their entire line for very limited run of vehicles, not to mention all the cost of developing the product and getting it certified for release (crash testing, etc.)

Yea truth is the twins are a niche market and everyone that wanted one has one. Sales are hurting. Theres a facelift for the frs in 2017 that I know of. Other than that nada.

Don't read as angry or sarcastic please:

How do you know there is a 2017 refresh? There has been not one single official word stating that. Random partial quotes of random unnamed insiders and out of context statements from officials on blogs do not count as official.

Ok guys, this charade has gone on long enough and it's time for me to tell you the truth. I am Tomomi Nakamura, CEO of Subaru of America Inc. All of the rumors that a turbo STi BRZ coming out are true. They will have a carbon fiber roof, 270hp, and we even switched out the fuel pump to alleviate our valued customers from that annoying cricket chirp. We even plan to offer it at MSRP USD $32,995 with 0% financing regardless of your credit score or down payment.

The only catch is, it won't be coming to USA or Canada. You won't get the turbo, you won't get the cool aero pieces, you won't even be allowed the STi badge! I'm even gonna keep the chirps. Why? Because when I was a young lad growing up in Japan, I was deeply in love with a girl who was deeply in love with me. One summer, on a vacation with my love to the United States, she fell in love with another man. A car enthusiast. With tears in my eyes and shattered pieces of a once beating heart in my hands, I went home to Japan to plot my revenge.

I would return to America as the head of the North American division of a major auto manufacturer. I would then push my head office to make all kinds of amazing variations of some awesome cars, but argue that they would never sell well in USA. All of this in the hopes of crushing the hopes and dreams of the man who stole my love.

So cry all you want, ALL of your speculations are 100% fact, but NONE of the cool STi versions of any of the cars you want will ever reach these shores, HAHAHAHA!

The sad part is now we will see "Automotive official makes soulful confession about trolling enthusiasts" on all the blogs!

So basically it's an uglified BRZ with an engine out of a racecar that will never see the light of day in real life? Ok.

Honestly all they need to do is release a BRZ with a factory supercharger and maybe a couple of stick on cosmetic bits (splitter, skirts, diffuser... maybe a CSL-style trunk lid or a wing if that's absolutely required to make it a "real STI"). People who want different handling or radically different looks are going to want to put their own suspensions / bodykits together anyway. The one thing that lots of people would like to have (with a warranty!) is a little more power. A factory supercharger would boost power without ruining throttle response, and should be pretty durable running modest boost. I'm sure Subaru could sell plenty of ~280hp BRZ STIs.
