Wow. It amazes me that almost 50% of the respondents are "old geezer" at 40. Astonishing. Maybe because I am 40! LOL

So, back to the OP's questions: I learned to drive on a 1979 Chevy Impala station wagon. I had to learn to parallel park that beast, then I was cleared for the road.

My first car was a 1985 Renault Alliance 1.7L 5-speed manual. Cushiest ride of all of my cars. Fun to drive too, but it "lunched" it's engine (broken timing belt, interference motor) at 80K. It was white with powder blue interior. We called it the "Appliance".

I have had a lot of what I consider interesting enthusiast cars (not in order): 1994 Miata R-Pkg, 1995 Mercedes E300D which went all the way to 495K miles that still looked new before it was totaled on my street in a flood, an E28 1985 BMW 524td (diesel) that was sold at 350K miles, Porsche Boxster, a couple of Mini Coopers, 2005 Miata LS, Mercedes 190E 2.6 Sportline (one of my favs), plus my current stable of 1968 MGB-GT, 1993 Miata LE, and the FR-S.

I like manual sports cars, and honestly the start of my "real" enthusiast life was the purchase of the 1994 Miata R... it was a transformation that continues today!

Well.. This thread fits me perfectly...
Here I thought I was done with "sport cars"
I recently sold my 08 vette and my beloved E36 M3
And am driving my beater car full time.. Thought its all
I need.. I'm done being a kid and all that.... Wrong !!!
While I miss the torque and associated sounds... I don't miss being a target for cops and every civic with a fat exhaust who wants to race me..
Looking for less with the same fun factor.. I think the FRS will
Be perfect .. Also tired of replacing big fat ass tires at 1200 bucks a pop..
Less is more.. Looking forward to one very soon...

First car was a 78 Suburban hand me down from Dad
Then the Mazda line up 85 RX-7, 89 RX-7, 93 RX-7, 99 Miata, 01 Miata, 04 RX-8, 99 Miata 10 AE.
Also had 93 NSX, 06 Vette, 03 Boxster. Right now, I am feeling like a treighter leaving Mazda,
The FR-S feels a lot like the Miata and a little like the NSX. To me, it has similar lines to the NSX, but the NSX was the most beautiful and best engineered car I have owned.

It's been awhile since I had a car to call my own but tonight I dropped the hammer and put a deposit on a 2014 DGM MT BRZ ST. My first car was a used 64 Ford Falcon with a 170 ci six with three on the tree. I drove that when muscle cars were king and would easily blow my doors off. What I did was find out that it had the same frame and components as the early Mustangs. So it was off the wreckers for sway bars and seat belts (an option back then) that bolted right in. Never had the money for HP but I did manage some rims and fat tires. Back in Edmonton where I grew up the roads were mostly straight as far as the eye could see with very few turns other that ninety degrees. So where I had my fun was a road that followed a ravine down into the river valley with lots of twists, turns and oh yea no radar traps. I use to get my kicks passing all the guys with the hot cars and their hot girl friends through the twisty bits as they could go fast in a straight line but that was it. Now the male ego being what it is you can imagine how this played out when some geeky looking guy passed them when they had their girl snuggled up beside them. Only problem for them was as we got to where the road straightened up again that was where the cops had the speed trap set up for those of us that were racing down old Groat Road. I got more that one dirty look as I slowly cruised by. That is how I became someone who believed in the saying that "straightaways were for fast cars but corners were for fast drivers". When I finally was able to afford newer vehicle's they have all been vans right from 1976 to tonight (shagged wagon - family transport). But that bug to go around corners fast has never died just been in remission. The fever started to grow stronger after I started racing karts competitively when our boys had grown up enough that I could use the excuse that it would be good training for them when they would start to drive on the roads. After all, driving karts on slick tires on a rain soaked track teaches you a thing or two about control and driving by the seat of your pants. Besides it still feels good to beat guys that upwards of 40 years my junior and see the looks on their faces when I pull of the helmet and they see all that grey hair (or what's left of it).
So the BRZ is going to be my pre-retirement toy where I can look forward to the next few bends in the road (and no radar traps). At 61 I should have a few more miles on the old odometer to go yet. Just can't wait for Christmas to come.
