What a flatulent motor. Farting through the mountains we go.

Let's face it. The Corolla was not a sports car. It was a dumpy economy car that people put go-fast parts on. The fanboys would all be drooling over Yugos if that had been the car in Initial D.

At least the current generation 86 is a real sports car.

2 minutes into that, had to turn it off. That corolla sounded way too obnoxious for me to get any iota of enjoyment from the video

I can't believe they decided that was the best way to portray the 86's sound. At 1:20 it's like a scene out of those "shreds" parody videos. "here's your sound!" BLAHJHHHHGHGJH LBAHHGHHG

I've watched petrolicious vids before, and I can tell they were trying to capture the driving character of the car.. but what they do best is film italian cars with great stories and fizzy exhausts that work with whatever audio setting they had. Trying to portray the corolla with an HKS exhaust in the same way just doesn't work.

Thumbs up

Exhaust can be changed/modified. Not really a big deal to me.

Ronny's AE86 builds have always set an exceptional example.

This video captures the essence of what it means to be an 86 enthusiast, and I was pretty ecstatic to see both chassis represented on Petrolicious.

You do realize Initial D was inspired by the 86 and its fans, and not the other way around, right? The Corolla 86 came out in the early 80's, while initial D started around 95.

The Corolla has had a massive fan base for decades. If it hadn't Toyota would have named this car something else.

InitialD:AE86
Dukes of Hazard:69 Charger
The Love Bug:VW Beetle
The Fast and the Furious:Toyota Supra
Knight Rider:TransAm
Wangan Midnight:Nissan Z

Fandom created over "hero cars", many of which probably could have been substituted for a "better" car.

Sure, there was definitely a community of people who couldn't afford a real sports car, so they pretended the Corolla was one. But there are a lot more fanboys since the manga than before.

The current 86 has almost nothing in common with the Corolla. It doesn't look like it, it doesn't handle like it, it doesn't have many mechanical similarities, it doesn't have a similar engine... It has more in common with Subaru vehicles than Toyota. Toyota only used the 86 name as a marketing hook in an attempt to imply a history that wasn't really there.

It's hilarious how many people have been suckered in by it. Toyota could rebadge a Prius and convince the fanboys it's the new Supra.

So a RWD, lightweight coupe with a redline over 7k, and 4 wheel disc brakes with production starting in 1983 isn't considered a sports car?

The current 86 and the original share a common ideology, which is an affordable, lightweight RWD coupe that focuses on driver feel but can also be used as a semi-practical daily driver.

A lot of people don't consider the current 86 a real sport's car either because it's slower than a Civic Si.

I think you forgot to include the Toyota 2000GT and Toyota Sports 800 which inspired the design of the car...

Thanks for making my point. Those cars inspired the design of the car, NOT the dumpy Corolla.
