Help finding a selling price.
I'm interested in getting rid of my 2013 BRZ Limited and getting into something bigger. I've been looking into a Mazda CX-5 and the dealership offered me $15,000 for my BRZ. I don't think it's a fair price, so I'm considering trying to sell privately or parting it out and then giving it to the dealership stock.
Here's some information on the car. Satin White Pearl, 60k miles. Here's what's on it so far that's worth a little money: WeatherTech Floor Mats Greddy SP Elite Exhaust Rydeen Duo Reverse Camera Eibach Pro-Kit Clear Tom's Tails Gurney Flap JDM Frameless Mirror Rexspeed Heated Convex Mirrors Raceseng Slammer Shift Knob + Gunmetal Reverse Lockout XXR 530's Chromium Black, Staggered setup (18") OEM+ Audio Reference 400CF I owe $17,000 on my loan, so I don't want to take a $2,000 hit by trading into the dealership for $15k. Would $17,000 be a fair price to sell privately? I'm honestly just wanting to get out of the loan and break even. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I could take some pics. It looks pretty much the same, but I guess I'll take some new ones anyways.

Well, mods on the car do hurt resale. Even if you paid top dollar for them. I would always pay more for a stock car. $15k is a bit low ball on the dealers end. I'm sure they would sell it for 18k.
If I was in your shoes I'll bring it back to look stock and get it to about $16.5 maybe $17 If you want a high selling price from your car sell it privetly.

When you trade in a car, all the mods detract from the value. Most dealers have to take your stuff off and replace with OEM, or they plan on auctioning it (wholesale), or they will have to sit it on the lot and wait for someone who is okay with your mods (which limits potential sales). You could always look at trading it in somewhere other than where you are shopping (carmax and a few other places will buy your used car without you buying from them).
$15k is a fair (but not good) trade-in, and you could probably get $17-19k if you are willing to wait on a sale and deal with all the private sale hoopla. Regardless of which route you decide to go, you'll make more money taking your mods off, selling them separately, and replacing them with OEM parts. It'll probably take you 1-2 months to sell the car and 3-6 months to sell all the parts (the faster you want to sell your stuff, the cheaper you'll need to let it go). |

Try and sell it privately. I doubt you'll be able to find a dealership to offer you much more. And sell the mods separately. Unless you find the perfect person, you will earn more that way.

If you sell it privately, $17,000 isn't unreasonable. However, potential buyers can and will use the higher mileage to negotiate a lower price. A 2013 Limited with 30,000 miles are around $18,000 to $19,000.

Thanks for all the advice! Sounds like I'm gonna go ahead and part out the big mods or the easily removable ones, and just try to sell quickly for cheap.
I'll probably advertise locally first just to hopefully get things off the car this weekend. If I have leftovers then I'll post them in a new thread. Thanks again for all the advice!

The hardest mod you have to remove is springs, why would you give away all those parts for free.
Put car back to stock Saturday Drink all day Sunday ??? Profit

Part out and trade in or sell. Just be firm at the dealer and they'll give you a good price if you're buying a new car same thing happened with my FRS I bought. Traded in a Cruze valued in at 9.5k and they ended up giving me 12k with coils, intake, and other after markets parts

I'll give the dissenting opinion; the dealer's $15K offer, providing he's giving you a good price on the new car, seems good to me. I bought my 2013 FR-S, "Toyota Certified," w/ 23,000 miles on it from a dealer for $17,250 back in October. Your car (and mine) are now almost a year older, yours has a lot more miles, and the dealership has to make SOME profit. As others have said, the mods you've made are a negative to the dealership, not a positive. Returning to stock and selling the mods outright is the right move there.
Best to ya, Barry |

Also take sales tax into consideration.

If you sold half the mods on your car for half of the price that they go for new you would make up 2k. Clear Toms will go for 300-375 depending on condition. OEM+ RF will go for $800 quickly. Consider it!

Thanks for all the additional input. I've begun to sell my mods locally and was able to find buyers very quickly. Getting an extra $1,000-$1,500 will definitely help me feel better about giving my car to the dealership...plus I feel good knowing my parts will continue to live on in someone else's car. Haha.
