Another reason why you shouldn't use all-season tires when the temperature starts to dip.

Personally I don't think links like this, to videos of people getting killed, should be put up without a warning.

You are exactly right. Where did you hear that? I got that info from Michelin. You can tell too. My winter tires feel grippier and more responsive in those lower temps while my summer tires start to slip.

I went up a mountain in New Mexico during a bad snow storm in my Eclipse GSX. They were actually closing the roads as I entered. I couldn't even see anything aside from little divits in the snow where the lane dividers were. At times all 4 tires would spin going uphill but I made it thru. Mitsubishi AWD and Michelin winter tires for the win!

I agree. This video should be removed. At very least there should be a warning that you are about to watch a video of someone being killed in their car from a crash.

First post here

Hello everyone, I am thinking about getting a BRZ and here is my situation. I figured I will just post it here instead of the intro section.

I have a 08 135 as my DD, which is a 3 season car. I have a 04 TL which is my winter beater but will need $1k of work before it will be ready for winter duty. (I know we are in the middle of the summer but I like to plan ahead)

I am thinking of getting a BRZ with snows for winter. I know it will be huge fun but is slightly concerned about ground clearance. I thought of putting snows on the 135 (6MT) but with 300hp and tq, I figured going to a lighter BRZ might be easier? I do not think there is much difference in ground clearance.

I know coming here I might get a biased view, but will still like to hear you guys out.

I guess the questions is what would you do if you were me? Before I was looking into the BRZ, I was actually thinking of replacing the TL with the Nissan Juke (I know it is ugly but I thought it would be indestructible in the snow). And if I got the Juke, I am sure it will be parked whenever there is no snow. With the BRZ, I would definitely take it out all year round.

Thanks

Won't a set of rims and good winter tires cost $1000 anyway? If I had a choice I wouldn't drive a brand new car in the snow. I also would not want to drive the BRZ in more than 5 inches of snow because of the ground clearance issue. Even with good winter tires. I'd fix up the TL.

you can pick up a set of WRX/Saabaru wheels on the cheap. 16x6.5 and run some 205/55/16 winter tires on the factory wheels.

EDIT: I meat 205/50/16, not 205/55/16.

Actually 205/55/16 would be correct

if you ran 17's 205/50/17 would be correct.

I drove a a lot of rear wheel drive cars with all season tires in the snow. Sand bags in the trunk does help with traction. I have used tool boxes, text books, cinder blocks, etc for winter traction. There is no replacement for skill. Doughnuts in an empty, snowed over parking lots can teach you a lot.
