I dunno if it's bad or not but drive at 4K regularly in the city and on backroads. Now, on the highway I'll cruise in 5th which put me around 3300 RPM if I recall correctly.

I don't use 6th at all...IMHO 4K is the sweet spot for this car.

If you’re in top gear you have no other option. Don’t loose sleep over it.

6th is totally fine if you're really just cruising nonchalantly, IMO. RPM isn't gonna matter at that point.

But yeah 5th is usually what I stick in except for long highway trips with variable traffic.

Hey Spike,

I agree but I prefer to be able to hear the engine and experience some NVH, even if it's just a bit. I feel like I'm lugging it in 6th...I'll probably change out the FD at some point.

EDIT: It's also nice to be able to just touch the gas pedal and get an instant response

Yeah if you’re lugging then sixth isn’t right. For me generally I’ll be in sixth at 60 and above (or 5th). 6th gear at any speed lower than about 60 basically has the engine lugging.

Quoting isn't working Spike.

I said it feels like I'm lugging it. Forgot to add (Compared to the way I normally drive it)

You got it, around 60 in 6th feels like the engine is lugging

I've made plenty of four-hour round trips in my FR-S doing about 3500rpm in sixth gear. The car will handle it no problem, it's within the design specs anyway. The only downside to cruising at that rpm is the decrease in fuel economy. It makes more sense to decrease your speed a bit and cruise at a lower rpm than to rev it up higher just for a bit more speed. You'll be fighting more air resistance and it'll take more fuel to maintain your speed at those higher speeds.

It matters to me as I make these round trips often so the fuel costs add up. To some it doesn't matter, but to answer the original question again, yes the car will be fine cruising at 4000rpm.

At green lights, I get left so far behind by normal econoboxes with their CVTs. To keep up I have to shift fast and rev and make all kinds of racket, meanwhile they just whoosh away. Anyway I'm ranting, back to my original question... so is it safe?

You're definitely not lugging in 6th at 60. You can be cruising at 45 in 6th (right around 2000 RPM) and not be lugging.

Now, if you floor it at 45mph in 6th, you'd be lugging.

Cruising requires very little horsepower.

Yes, I'm aware of that but I said feels. The car just feels better running at a higher RPM IMHO. Same as when I drive at a higher RPM in the city. The throttle response is instantaneous.

I agree. The car just seems happier in high revs. It's a high strung engine that makes all its power up top so it makes sense. If I am around 2000 RPM the car is sluggish and doesn't sound very good. My LTFT tends to be worse in the 2-3k RPM range too.

That's fine, you're just wasting gas. Cruising implies a constant velocity no? If im getting up to speed and people are going too slow i'll stay in 4th or 5th for a while sometimes.

That's the beauty and fun of a manual transmission
