Should have just followed this blueprint....

This brings up a suspicion I've had for a while, that the ND was always supposed to have the 180hp motor, but they couldn't get it ready/pass emissions/whatever in time. So they released it with a detuned motor that did pass, while the car itself was engineered with the 180hp motor in mind. This could explain why Mazda didn't change much to beef the chassis up.

If a race team or privateer decides they want to utilize the platform for motorsports and want to drop a different motor in or exchange paint with other cars, it'd be a no-brainer to start with the cheaper of the 2 options. Right?
There are two ways to look at this -- from a manufacturing perspective and a marketing perspective. You can make a 4 cyl car on the Supra line and market it as a different car. It would be possible that the next gen 86 is built on the Supra chassis but with different body panels, less insulation, etc. Marketing a 4 cyl version of the same car at a much lower price is problematic from a marketing perspective. How do you advertise both cars at once? From everything I've read, I think there will be a race version of the Supra, but it will cost a lot more -- like Porsches and Vettes. I also think the newer Supra will be much harder to mod than the current 86 as everything will be tighter with less space. Only time will tell.

FWIW, the Supra acts like a much heavier, less nimble car around the track, where the 86's low COG makes it a better performer. Now, if they could just give it some guts...

You can still pioneer technology without being first.

Yea turbos themselves are well over a 100 years old. They go back to aircraft engines for high altitudes. In fact, it was a GM engineer (Sandford Moss) who pioneered it, testing them on Pike's Peak back in the early 1900s. They were used in aircraft engines as early as 1920 I believe.

Not 100% sure about cars, but I think it was the Oldsmobile Jetfire in the early 60s that was the first production car with a turbo.
