All vehicles built in the last decade have fuel cutoffs to save gas, when you're coasting in gear the engine doesn't use and gas and your momentum powers the accessories. When you pull it out of gear the engine will have to use fuel to power the accessories (water pump, A/C, brake booster, alternator etc. etc.).

In addition fuel consumption is a function of rpm, load and throttle position; basically having your foot flat on the floor to accelerate in 6th gear is less efficient than downshifting and using half throttle in 5th or 4th gear and then upshifting when you reach the desired speed, it will also take less time.

The less time you spend accelerating and using the brakes the more efficient you will be.

i agree, and one must accelerate to reach 6th,and then, stay there without lugging the engine to achieve the best mileage. you should ''always" down shift to apply more power before shifting back into overdrive,as it is more efficient fuel wise to do so,and imparts "less" stress on the engine. this is true. also correct is less time spent accelerating, and braking creating kinetic energy, thus, burning fuel at a faster rate. again, being in "overdrive" as much as possible alleviates these concerns.

To be honest i beat the crap out of my car. WOT out of every gear, shift at redline as long as I am not excessively going over the speed limit. I never get 25 combined which i drive on the highway and on the street almost everyday. But who bought a performance car for gas mileage anyway.

This is what I do, but the crank and rod bearing probably don't like that 2k rpm. I did notice a big improvement at low rpm with the Mazda 0w20 oil.

Hay guise. Who uses the front drink holder for hot beverages? I use the front drink holder but this guy at my school said you should use the rear cup drink holder for hot beverages because of science. What do you guys think?

Top heavy drinks have a tendency to fly out of the holder under heavy breaking. Red light! Shit! *breaks hard* hot coffee all over the place.

Quickly let the clutch out before the revs fall and keep on the gas to maintain the revs. It's a super quick shift and the quick rev is necessary to make you not lurch as much as the clutch re-engages. If you have an intake/exhaust it sounds godly too. It's fun to experiment with downshifting and upshifting. If you can start to learn where the rpm's are at each mph, you can downshift and upshift much easier while being an overall smoother driver too. Hope I helped.
yup ..from 45-57 you can really be in second gear from 5-7.4k..57mph = stock rev limiter warning in second gear at 7395.

I don't shift. Just stay in second all the time. At 1600 miles now, no issues so far! You'll find if you don't shift, notchiness of the gears, difficulty shifting 1-2, and concerns about speeding on the highway are all non-issues!

The general rule as I've always heard it is 2500RPM or so for sedate driving, with 3500 or so for more acceleration.

In my cars I've always tried to keep it above 2k for anything but neighborhood puttering. It helps me stay in the band where I can get some response from the engine if I want it on a whim.

Funny story about this. I was driving home from work one day and had a 44oz drink in the middle cupholder because it wouldn't fit in the door cupholders. Well, I crest a hill and there's a huge cattle trailer pulling into this two lane highway. Naturally I slam on my brakes, but to my horror I watch as the cupholder, with the drink STILL IN IT, slow motion flies into my passenger footwell...Needless to say I was a little mad for the rest of the drive home...
