I can just imagine you shouting at whoever is renting you the car "You can't stop me, I'm renting this damn car" and the person just sighing "I'm not trying to stop you sir please just take the keys and go". "I'm not having any of that give me my damn car!"

https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/...bon-fiber-cars After doing some research, it seems that the BMW i3 uses cloth with injected resin, so not a particleboard style like some manufacturers, but not pre-impregnated style like the Alpha Romeo 4C, which is more like exotic cars. As far as the difference between prepreg and wet, I believe when OEMs do wet layup they would have a process to ensure no voids and similar strength to prepreg. Forged composite parts are also quite strong despite chopped fibers. It's about getting the fibers closer together, whatever process used doesn't matter. |

The article mentions that BMW injects resin into a mold under high heat and pressures. I have no clue if they can achieve a similar quality, evenness, finish and performance that comes from using pre-impregnated pieces; I have seen the 4C in person, and the exposed carbon is really nice. Some of the forged composites look nice too, but there is no way they would be as strong as traditional carbon fiber just like how plywood, MDF, etc doesn't stand up to the strength of wood or layered wood. Congrats man. Been on the Alfa 4C forum yet? It's not as "entertaining" as this forum, but plenty of good info.

Yep I'm on 4C-forums -- more DIY'ers than I expected for this type of car.

I hope they miraculously found some good reliability and stuck it in there so that when the value gets to normal car prices they can still be driven hard and not break.
