Haven't heard of anything yet, just lots of vandalism

New cars are very hard to steal, hence why all the most stolen cars are made in the 90's, and some 2000's pick-ups. Smart keys and immobilizers make the car very difficult to actually drive away in a stolen car.

Nope...but then again, mine's a manual. Manuals are less likely to get stolen because of how few people actually know how to drive them.

You know, I was wondering about that the other day. Got any data to back that up, or just something you heard somewhere?

Would be interesting to conduct a survey and see how many car thieves can drive manual. My bet is that it's higher than average, but that's a low bar to clear since last I heard only 15% of Americans can drive manual.

Nope, I don't have any data to back it up. It's just something I always assumed.

Seeing how many car thieves can drive manual depends on the car thieves being referred to: professional (like the guys in "Gone In 60 Seconds") or ghetto gangstas.

As it turns out, there is no clear-cut answer because no one has conducted a study regarding the specific phenomenon.

"Some thieves might be thwarted in their attempt to steal a car with a manual transmission, since many thieves possess varying levels of intellect. That very personal element is also a factor in the degree of expertise necessary to overcome some of the more sophisticated security systems. Most car thieves are just not that swift and therefore resort to stealing older, easier targets. But there are those in the car-thief ranks who are quite capable of making off with anything that they intend to steal." Frank Scafidi, director of public affairs for the National Insurance Crime Bureau

^^ That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

I know for a fact that my car won't get stolen because most Americans are fat arses and won't fit the tight seats.

Well, I Googled around a bit after asking you about that. Turns out there's not a lot of hard data, a ton of speculation, and reports that are all over the place, from "way safer" to "easier to steal".

I think it really depends on where you live, and what kind of auto theft is prevalent in your area. You're generally safer from car-jackers or joy riders who are as likely to know how to drive stick as the rest of the populace (i.e. almost none of them), but more at risk from pros who know it's easier to get a manual car into neutral and rolling, pop the clutch, and it'll start right up. But on the flip side of that, most professionals steal cars for parts, and if there's not a lot of demand for cars with manual transmissions, then what's the sense in stealing the car in the first place?

Interesting topic. (By the way, funny story out there of a guy who tried carjacking a lady in a 350Z, got in... and found out it was a manual. He spent so long futzing with it, trying to figure out how to work it, that the cops caught him in the damn parking lot. Too funny! Score one for the ladies who know how to use a clutch! )

I guess that's your opinion. I honestly think your train of thought is stupid, but I'm not going to lambaste it.

While it may sound stupid, it's true. Most theives are looking to smash and grab. Easiest cars to do that are AT because you just put it in drive and go.

I guess that's the upside on MT cars being less common. Less people learned on stick, less people teaching stick, less thieves knowing how to drive stick.
