I try to have it both ways and am the guy you'll see at track days cleaning up with Griot's Speed Shine between runs.

The day I bought mine. That doesn't mean I don't care if it gets damaged as that has an effect on resale value.

Having said that I'm in the process of buying another E36 M3 (an Avus Blue non-sunroof car) right now which basically means the BRZ will be prepared for sale unless I combine the best of both of my E36 M3s into one car and sell the other. I still don't use the BRZ enough to justify it's cost though.

@suaveflooder

You bring up an interesting subject... If someone were to open their door into my car, expect a swift fist into theirs. I like to keep my paint and the rest of the car as immaculate as possible. But here's the flip side, I have taken my car rallyx'ing and have gotten chips, blown tires, broken the front bumper 3 times now and don't really care. If my car gets damaged it better be with my hands or there shall be hell to pay! lol I treat my cars like its the last day I'm going to drive, ever.

Just like when you see race cars. They are usually cleaned before races to look their best, because anything could happen racing your car and if you go out, you might as well be looking your best when you crash lol

This is the reason I don't have an FR-S yet. If I bought a new one, I'd obsess over it. In another year, I'll pick up a used '13 and not worry because I'm going to beat the snot out of it.

History of my 2012 WRX. 2 replaced bumper due to my ice track racing. 1 replaced rear bumper due to my neighbor backing his bobcat into it. A total of $1000 deductible for those two accidents. I didn't even blink an eye when it happen. I drive my cars like I bought it. Yes, read that sentence again. I bought the car so I am gonna drive it, everyday, with rock chips every where and a crack windshield (very common in alaska as we use ROCKS as an alternative to salt). It does not bother me one bit. I don't care about door dings or huge as rock chips on my hood. I have fun in my car. I drive my car and I enjoy it. I enjoy its heated seats in -40F. I do not baby sit nor do I intentionally not take care of it. I vacuum it once a week. Wash it in the summer, never in the 9 months of winters. LOL. It still runs like a champ and will continue too do so. The OP is right. Don't baby sit your car so much that you are always paranoid about getting it "damage." Enjoy it for what it is, a $21k-$28k car. This might be your first car you bought so I can understand where some of you guys are coming from. This is like my 7th car I have ever owned. As much as I love cars, I still love my wife more. Just saying.

I feel the same way about cars as I do guitars. Guitars are meant to be played. Cars are meant to be driven. Cosmetics are cosmetics. It's unrealistic to try to keep things absolutely perfect. This is one of the major reasons why I prefer to buy everything used. Generally, they already have some imperfections/chips/scratches, so fuck it! Why worry about it? You can still take care of your things, but there's no reason to be anal retentive about it. I understand people who buy new are worried about resale value, and that makes sense, I guess, but if you're always worrying/getting stressed out about imperfections, you will never be able to fully enjoy the car.

Just in case you ever want to buy one of my cars, I never fart in the seat. Always lift!

I have to ask though, do you verify by scratch and sniff?

I knew it was just a car the day I bought it. I try to take decent care of my cars but at the end of the day I don't want to look back and think "Why didn't I drive that damned car more?"

More than likely what the previous owner did, before you purchase it.

This thread reminds me of @Chad86, a member of this forum. His obsession with keeping his car in unused condition took the enjoyment right out of owning a new car. He's so stressed that he plans to get a daily driver, and only drive the FR-S 3 months out of the year. Sad and disturbing to see owners like this who don't drive the car like it was meant to.

I'm okay with normal wear and tear like rock chips, but I'm NOT okay with preventable damage like door dings, or unusual damage like hail. I'll always get those things fixed.

I think I realized that my BRZ would never be perfect forever when I first bottomed out and scratched the front lip. I had a crisis driving home after that asking, "Why am I so stupid" and "Do I even deserve this car?" I quickly got over it.

Cars are meant to be driven and I am happiest driving my BRZ. I don't obsess about keeping it pristine but I don't abuse it either. I wash and wax frequently, just because it makes the car so much easier to clean next time. I also find detailing a car very relaxing. My friends think I do it because I'm obsessed with my car but honestly, I'd do this for any car I own.

I just drove 1100 miles in my BRZ. It was covered in dirt and got a few new rock chips but that's OK. It gives it more character and shows that my car is not a garage queen. A car is a car, and shouldn't be causing you undue amounts of stress. I get enough of that in my daily life.

My BRZ makes me forget about my stresses. After 10 months of ownership, I still love it as much as I did picking it up at the dealer. Actually, I love it more since I've had so many good times with the car already.
