On another, almost-related note, I've taken the oft-spoken advice to NOT set my GPS/Nav "Home" setting to my house, just in the event my car or GPS is stolen. It's set to the address of the police station four miles from my house..

Oh, that's a great idea. I also use a fake close-by address but a police station is genius.

I have seen personal plates on squads that are even marked. Normal the chiefs SUV or a k9 narcotics unit. I just look for the lights hidden behind their grill/bumper or by the visor to verify if it may be a cop.
