So Rocker Arm and other parts have been ordered. Toyota will not allow them to install it yet.

Toyota instructed the dealer to hold off and wait for the Engineer to inspect the engine. Once the Engineer inspects the engine, then they will either proceed with installing the rocker arm or whatever the Engineer instructs them to replace.

Toyota wants them to perform cold tests on the engine before returning the car to me.

Update on the other FRS that came in -- Rod Knock confirmed. Nothing has been ordered for that car.

Forgive my pestering. Did you have a chance to ask them to save the failed part(s)? ...for science.

Toyota wants to keep the parts, an Engineer will be here Thursday to inspect and most likely take it with them.

I'll ask my friend at the dealership to see if he can snag a picture for me (unfortunately, hes not the one working on my car).

Gotcha. Thanks for the update. I can't wait to see what the engineer finds out. Maybe there's more to it or more damage? Keep us posted. All will be good as new :-). Mine is next

My BRZ is my 5th Subaru. My first was a 2006 Legacy 2.5i that had a noisy engine from the day I drove it home new from the dealer. I sold the car this past fall with 200K on it, and engine still running strong. Not saying your problem is nothing to worry about, obviously it is. But for many others, know that some noise is a given part of a lot of a lot of Subaru engines.

This issue is identical to the problems I had with my original motor in 2013. I was cruising down the highway one night and the car started to knock. Long story short - the dealer blamed me for racing that car and revving it to 8500rpm. I requested proof, and they couldn't/wouldn't provide any and pushed the repair through insurance. 7k miles later, the engine blew up (but it did have help from a Vortech kit and Visconti at that point).

For some background, I was having coolant issues since new: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36150

Blown engine story: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=28

Some pics: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=32

I'm not saying that your engine may suffer the same fate, but just keep an eye out for the signs and bring it to Toyota the second something is amiss.

Yes, I can accept to a certain degree engine issues, especially in a new design and in a great car like the BRZ, but not when the dealers often try to blame the drivers. Subaru needs to acknowledge the issue and take care of their owners!
I'd attest that to statistics, have a higher number of those vehicles on the road and large portion not reporting it to a forum as the main crowd may not use a forum. The FRS/BRZ twins have a smaller sample size and the fact a massive percentage use the forum as well are "car people" it exacerbates the failure rate. I'd like to see a comparison of failure rates to other vehicles using an equivalent proportion.

Failure rates are extremely difficult to determine. The extended warranty companies release their findings but those are older cars and they don't include mileage or reason for failure.

Manufacturers aren't going to release failure rates for obvious reasons. Parts per million I would guess a good number for the major companies would be less than 50.

I got an update this morning.

They are replacing all of the valves, rocker arm, lifters, and Toyota wants them to perform a valve adjustment. They can't do that without the lifters.

ETA on parts is Monday or Tuesday. Looking at getting the car next Friday.

Direct Injectors were never pulled.

Good to hear they are taking care of you. Did they tell you why this happened? Let us know how it all turns out once you get your ride back.

Haven't yet.

I'll try to ask why this happened and if it could possibly happen again.

Ask if you can see the parts. Take pics but don't ask first because they might not like that. Still, easier to say "oops, sorry."
