What's an 86?

I just called the dealership from which I bought my 86 last year to ask a simple question. The service guy answers the phone and I tell him, "I have a question about scheduled maintenance on my 86."

"What kind of car is it?"

"It's an 86."

Silence.

"An Eight-Six."

"What's an Eight-Six? You mean a 1986?"

"I bought it from you last year."

"We don't sell a car called an 86."

"You know - the sports car. A BRZ? FR-S?"

"Oh, the Scion."

"Yeah, but it's a Toyota."

The dealerships really know nothing about these cars. He also told me the wrong schedule service interval, which I had to ask him to look up to be certain.

Dealership: "We can't do an alignment on your car because it is lowered."

Me: "Can you get a stock FR-S on the alignment machine."

Dealership: "No, they are too low."

Me: "Wait, What? Then don't tell me it's my springs!"

I mean WTF!

My dealership installed my TRD stuff a couple weeks after I bought the car 3 years ago. The service manager was excited because it was the first time they were doing more than just oil and filters on one. Their head Toyota tech did the work himself. It was a good experience. There are some good dealers out there.

Weird to hold a dealer accountable for not knowing the nickname of one of the many cars they sell. It is a little odd I guess.

Not too long back I rolled into my Subaru dealership after replacing two of my tires because of a nail in one of the sidewalls. The tread on the older pair was still fine.

The service rep told me I needed at least two new tires, preferably all four. She said you have to replace all of them at the same time, and that there was too big a difference in the diameter of my front and rear tires.

I knew exactly where she was headed with that, but I decided to feed her some string anyway and asked why the tire diameter mattered.

As if explaining it for the thousandth time (which it probably was), "If the tires are not the same size, it messes with the sensors on the all wheel drive."

"That's a rear wheel drive car," I said.

She stared at me for a moment in complete confusion, until it clicked, and she and I both started laughing. She put her hand on my arm and said, "You're right! I'm so used to everything here being all wheel drive I forgot that car doesn't have it! Never mind!"

It's not a nickname. It's the actual model name of the Toyota version after the demise of Scion.

I was told the techs had a blast doing my car. They started out just doing the exhaust but then kept saying "well we offer tint" then "well the exhaust isn't good with out the intake "well now we have the TRD stuff it should have the spoiler" and so on. This is the story I heard from two different guys so I believe it.
Not all employees at dealerships are useless.

As in Toyota USA 86'd the FR-S name.
Very few people outside of the military seem to know that. We used it all the time back in the day. I stopped using it when I started just getting blank stares from the younger guys when I would say to just 86 it.
