TOB again?!

Looking for my higher-mileage peeps out there. I know there's not too many "higher mileage" twins on here yet, so looking for opinions of those few others out there that are getting up there.

Has anyone had their TOB replaced after blow-out, only to have it die again later on?

Long story short; my OEM TOB blew out at 84k (KM). Had it replaced under warranty at a local Subaru dealership. TOB, clutch fork, and flywheel were all changed for new parts.

I'm now at around 175k (KM), and upon starting my car yesterday, I heard the same kind of faint "squealing" bearing noise coming out from under the car. The noise definitely audibly changes when the clutch pedal is depressed, but this is NOT the clutch fork for sure, as it is a constant "squealing" and not a quick "squeak", which is the easiest way of differentiating the issues from each other. I have a video of it but can't upload to YouTube while I'm at work, so I can add it later if necessary, but it sounds very similar to how it sounded last time, leading up to the TOB failure.

I had (stupidly) assumed they would have used a more robust, "updated" part in the replacement, so that this wouldn't happen again. That being said, I am fully aware that nothing lasts forever, but this is still annoying.

Just wanted to find out if any others have had a second failure after replacement. Would be good to know if I need to budget for the cost of a TOB every friggin' 80-100k moving forward...

Thanks everyone!

Well, if they didn't order the newer revised TOB, then yes I would see it fail. That's pretty much what I'm guess happens.

Mine TOB went out at about 70k miles. No problems since and I'm at 93kmiles.

My first TOB started making noise at about 60K (K) and blew at about 90K (K). I am around 209000 on the new one and it is fine. I had them check the part number on the replacement and the one they had in stock was the old one. They ordered in the new one when I pointed out the TSB part number was different. Very possible your dealer didn't check and just used the old part number.

Please point me in the direction of one person stating the new part failed. I do not recall reading any such thing.

If you did not read it, I bet it did not happen!

Have seen a number of 17+ owners having throw out bearing failures. Unless they are not coming from the factory with the new part #. Seen it on a couple a local car, and in FB groups.

The 17s that were built in late 16 and early 17 had the original part number. It is not the updated one failing on them it is still the old one.

The TSB even states up to 17.

It depends on when you had it done. My 2015 had the TOB start failing at around 35,000 miles. Brought it in, and had it replaced under warranty... but that was like a few MONTHS before the TSB went out, so I just missed getting the new part. I assume this one will also go bad any day now, as I'm now at 72,000 miles. I'm hoping I can maybe work out a deal with SOA if that becomes the case...

Not to thread jack but is this repair covered under a quality program if your vehicle is out of warranty? My car is 5.5 years old with 61XXXKM.

Thanks in advance. Sorry about the thread jack OP, and GL!

Can confirm this personally on a Canadian car.

No it is not. It is only covered by the base warranty. It is a TSB not a recall.

Hard to know if you got the new or old TOB unless you open up the bell housing and visually inspect the white dot.

I replaced mine around 80k miles and I don't even know if I bought the new or old version (didn't read forums until after putting everything back and too lazy to take apart the car again). At around 95k miles now and has a familiar squeak after the rain. Not sure if it is clutch fork or TOB. Will have to wait and see unfortunately.

Usually if it's a short "squeak" that only happens when you push in or release the clutch pedal, that would most likely be the clutch fork. If it's a continuous "squealing" that noticeably changes when the clutch pedal is depressed, than it is probably the TOB. That's the easiest way to tell the 2 (similar) issues apart from each other.
