I have had this discussion with Pauter rods many times, According to Pauter A low hard pull lets say 2k up damages the rods because of the load. Even tho the engine has the power to overcome the load the force exerted on the rods is most at at full load and low rpm.

Therefore limiting torque at the bottom end on this engine (stock) is ideal. Applying torque when the engine already has momentum is fine, that's also why a turbo could potentially cause more issues if the boost all comes in at once at low RPM.

Yeah, it isnt a diesel engine.

edit: btw I dont get it why ppl think about "low rpm" (<4000) torque at this engine. It is desinged to put out the most power at higher rpms. Throw the torque up at the rpm band and suprise yourself - its fcking fast and will last :P

Are there forged after market connecting rods for the engine in case someone wanted to go F/I?

Edit: Actually never mind. Found them. They aren't even that expensive. I don't see why you wouldn't want to invest in them.

I will also be doing this. Getting a Pauter rod tapered to fit the stock piston.

There is no structural issue since the power stroke pushes the pin down on the small end where all the material is still intact.

Only problem is that the rod can no longer be serviced. Only replaced if any small end issues arise.

Parts may be cheap.

Labor and proper install wouldn't be. That's most likely the reason.....

I'm so happy my brz isn't my day car and I have a business car. Because when the engine comes out I would to think I can build my own. I have experience in installing rods, pistons and valve springs with retainers in my hayabusa and the pig still hasn't blown up.

Labor for a tech is high enough it's not affordable for 95% of the people of really want to build a motor for the FI setup.

Add me to the list

It can happen to anyone which is not the same thing as saying it will happen to everyone. More track days, adding power, especially forced induction simply increases the likelihood that something will break and it will probably a rod.

Mine popped recently after about two weeks of forced induction. I went with the "safest" supercharger system, had it conservatively tuned to 20 degrees of advance and a 7K limiter, have the JR oil cooler and a full blown radiator but it still threw a rod accelerating onto a freeway which cut a trench across the top of the block.

Moral of the story is that blame is not an issue, understanding the potential risk and how modifications will change the odds is. You can not bet your motor that having a good tune and cooling provides any guarantee, they just change the odds a little more in your favor. I will be starting a new thread soon focused on the choices to be made when replacing a blown motor, Thankfully I have the resources to do what I want and I really expected to eventually have a built motor or a V8.

BTW there are 4 other cars with blown motors at the same shop in Orlando as I write this so yes there is an issue.
