Quoting myself here. Just washed the car, and YES water will sit in a puddle right there and can leave a very large water spot. I'm betting that's exactly what it is.

if that does happen, wouldnt it come off if you wipe it with a wet towel? Or become less pronounced? I couldn't even scratch it off with my finger :/

I also double wipe the car and do a triple take to make sure there is no water left after a wash. I would've caught this :/

Not necessarily if the water spot has been left on the surface for some time and then gets burned into the clearcoat / paint by the sun.

I've had exactly that happened to the left side of the hood with my old Golf GTI, it was a weird occurrence but wasn't noticeable unless at certain angles.

hmm interesting. That's rather unfortunate then :/ how weird. Thanks though! definitely going to take that into consideration.
