I've always loved the 4G63 and SR20 when it came to 4 bangers.

You want to daily drive your 2AR-FE based on a race engine built for drifting?

I strongly suggest you to look up what is done to that engine, and whether or not you have around $20-50k lying around to rebuild your engine when it goes bad.

so how much horsepower do you think you'll need to accomplish this?

What part of the engine? The head? Over 300lbs with fluids, and the fluids aren't THAT heavy. The turbo setup to hit 800lbs would add a significant amount of weight. Then you'd need a transmission that could handle the torque.

Have you even swapped before, bro?

2 Things.

1. Fuck Mike Kojimas well researched opinions.

2. If you think you need power to drift you are doing it wrong.

OK I'm done taking this conversation as a serious one.

Enjoy finding your "500hp just for fun" with your 2AR-FE or whatever else engine you want to dream of.

If 500hp is your goal and you're willing to swap in an engine, you start by looking at engines that are making as close to 500hp as possible to begin with. That way you have one task i.e. swapping the engine and not two i.e. build an engine and swapping it

The 3S is very similar in design to the 2J and they both featured work by Yamaha. They are also from the same time period.

Also, I have a Celica All-Trac with a 3S, a lot of people forgot about those cars...much better than MR2

Toyota and I have different views on what an engine bay should look like.

The 2AR is actually a really good engine. The guy who pioneered the 2GR swap kits for MR2s (Gouky) put one in his AW11 and is now putting one in a ZZW30.

They are a little on the heavy side at 320lbs with all accessories, but IIRC the FA20 is even heavier than that. With a balance shaft delete you are looking at close to 300, which is not bad.

They are underrated and make around 170whp stock, and if you switch the header out they get to nearly 200whp. They are extremely insensitive to oil temp and have the excellent 3 stage oil pump which avoids bypassing as much oil. Gouky said he ran his with the factory Rav4 oil to water heat exchanger and the engine was totally fine with the oil at 300F during thousands of miles of racing. You can stroke it with the 1AR crank to 2.7L with basically no weight penalty.

What I would do on the FRS is probably stroke it with the 1AR crank, drop some stiffer valve springs in so it can rev higher, then add forged pistons to increase the compression ratio. You would shed a little bit of weight, gain a huge amount of torque, and end up with probably around 260bhp, while keeping the car NA and very reliable. Of course, this would be quite expensive to do, but it would be fun.
