Toyota's been the largest shareholder of Subaru for a while now.

https://www.subaru.co.jp/en/ir/stock/quote.html

I'm speculating that this announcement is a step towards Toyota acquiring more shares of Subaru (i.e. issuing more common or preferred stock), but not as a majority shareholder. Most of the other investors in Subaru are financial institutions, so it would have to be an outright buyout of them if no additional shares are issued.

There's no financial incentive to merge if you can just work more closely on R&D/manufacturing to reduce cost.

I suspect the next version will be pretty close to this version. It'll still be RWD, it'll still have a back seat and enough cargo space for a full set of tires, it will still handle like a go kart. My prediction is that it will remain NA with a modest bump in power to something like 215 or 220 HP. It might get some updated technology, like adjustable suspension modes. And they'll "update" the looks with a new body that conforms to the prevailing marketing design strategies of the two companies.

The people who buy the new car will be the same kind of people who bought the last one. That's not necessarily the same actual people going back for a second 86, since some of us will have moved on to other needs or interests. But the same type of people will be the target market, which will include new people looking for a similar driving experience. That all just means it really won't need to change that much.

That article is dated 9/26. The first paragraph says:

"There’s only a month to go until the new Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ are unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show on the 24th of September."

I'm not sure I'd trust anything from a writer who isn't even sure what month he's in.

I would like an equal bump in power and torque but I don't want to lose the feeling that i get more power the higher rpm i go.

In many ways, they've successfully incorporated some of the traits of Saabs into their cars, and appeal to similar buyers. I find Subaru's more interesting and fun to drive (WRX, BRZ, Crosstrek – how many CUV’s can be had with a stick?) than the bland appliances made by Toyota.

When sclerotic a big company (= Toyota in this case) buys a spunky small one (= Subaru), it's often with the goal of hoping to infuse the moribund giant with some of the feistiness of the small one. Unfortunately, what usually happens is the opposite, and the bureaucracy of the giant smothers all the soul out of the upstart (like GM did to Saab). I hope that doesn't happen here.

If Toyota has their way (and they might, being the big money), I wouldn't be surprised if the next generation BRZ/86 came only with an automatic transmission.

I think Toyota as a company is waaaay smarter than that. They know exactly what Subaru brings to the table. And Mazda. Give them a little more credit. Never in a million years will the 2nd gen 86 be auto only. The Mk5 Supra is auto only for now because I would guess that Toyota is working on a perfect manual to pair it with. And in that segment, with the Cayman as a benchmark, it will have a manual. The auto they used is one of the best (aside from certain dual clutch or PDK) so it’s a good match for the Supra.
I agree they were making boring (and reliable) cars for a while, but their success is the only reason we have any Toyota sports cars at all. So picture the Mk5 Supra, a 2nd gen 86, and possibly a new MR2. That’s a bad ass lineup, and no other large auto company will have anything like that.

To me, this is the most logical answer. If I were to bet what will be happening, it'll be this. I'd probably wager that with the modest power bump, they're going to make an attempt to address the torque as well. Otherwise, I agree -- RWD 2+2 with chassis & suspension tweaks/improvements.

One sentence about the 86/BRZ and the rest of the article about profound change in the auto industry, CASE, AWD and hybrid. This does not inspire confidence in me that the next gen will continue to be a mechanically simple, lightweight sports car.

I hope the 86 does not become the next new age Eclipse.

Yes, I am a pessimist. At least, there will always be a lot nice used first gen FR-S/BRZ/86's around to fulfill the needs.

the supra is never going to get a manual. the reasoning is at the performance level it's at, the PDK is quicker.

it's a very different philosophy. higher end performance cars, like what the supra are competing for market share for are all about lap times and efficiency. driver engagement comes 2nd in that. they've even released statements that the expected take rate wouldn't even cover the development costs of a manual transmission.

that is what makes the 86 different. it's philosophy is a low cost drivers car. the entire chassis prioritizes driver engagement over cutting lap times.
