And the final question I had was about any additional dynamat or anything that would weigh the hood down. To my knowledge there are no steel replacement hoods, but some sort of straight weight modification to the hood was my final thing to look at (which involves weighing the hood, I even provided a target weight).

So trust me, I've been trying to figure this out from day 1, but I haven't got any information back. Seeing the thread and knowing that the car has gone through 4 different sets of hood struts and seeing a different color hood on the car is a clear indicator to me that we need to look elsewhere than the hood struts themselves.

Hi Chase @GrimmSpeed, quick question... Are the nuts holding the struts supposed to rust? It looks like those are the only thing that's rusting on my unit and I don't even winter drive this car...

Sorry OP for hi-jacking the thread.

I'm still thinking it's going to be something with the hinges, but we'll see!

Are they supposed to rust? No. Can they? Yes. Neither the nut nor the ball stud are stainless so its surprising that the nut has rusted but the ball stud hasn't as they are both clear zinc coated. If you wanted to grab a replacement or a stainless nut locally they're 5/16-18.

While we are waiting, why don't you take the hood off your car and weigh it … then we will have a basis of comparison ..

@womachris , while we are waiting, I suggest you take and post some pictures of your struts as they are mounted so we can see both the top and bottom mounts. A picture of each side would be good.

You could disconnect the struts and use a fish scale to measure the weight at the front of the hood in up/down positions.
Any of us without struts can do the same very easily.
An other question I did not see an answer for is did they all work for a while then fail or not work from the start?

Have you tried sticking a magnet on the hood to see if it is steel?
