You probably bought the ball joint tool as your post said the Harbor freight tool worked perfectly

Do you think I just hammered it out? I know hammering on the hub is not the best idea.
Only got my car 3 months ago, but came with a broken stud. I hammered it out with ease. I used a normal mallet. I gave it two light hits, and it popped right out. I really didn't hit it hard at all. The mallet didn't even touch the hub.

I don't know if they all come out that easy, but that was my experience.

Instead of using washers, you might consider using a specialized tool:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ETUD22
One of the reviews on Amazon specifically says this worked great on a BRZ.

I'd also be curious to learn if there's a better way/tool to pull an old stud other than basically whacking it with a hammer.

There is; I mentioned it already in this thread.

Washers are perfectly fine.
The tool adds no real value.

Good catch, I missed that.
Ok, the HF ball joint tool is probably better than bashing the hub.

https://www.harborfreight.com/3-4-qu...tor-99849.html

I now remember bashing the rotor to get it off.

My car's at 50k with OEM brakes
Maybe it's time to replace the pads.
Rotors should be fine.

How do you check rotor width?
Are there markings on the rotor?

Yes, like in the video. It works easy for install and removal. I have upgraded all of my studs with the same tool.

FYI...
You will also need a big socket (36mm IIRC) for the rear axle nut if you are replacing the rear studs with ones that are longer than OEM +5mm.

I used this tool. Works perfectly. I had about 3-4 OEM Studs break on me and use Dorman now.
