For 3rd and 4th gear, I usually use my palm to push 3rd up and pull 4th back with my thumb facing downwards. The transmission already centers the gear selector for you for these gears; so there's no need to try to guide it.

But yeah, I don't think I've ever overreved an engine. The few times I ever grabbed too low a gear, I only partially let the clutch out and immediately realized I was in the wrong gear so I pushed the clutch back in and backed it out of the gear.

And yeah, for me, 1st and 2nd is always pull left, 3rd and 4th are neutral up and down, and 5th and 6th are push right so it's pretty easy to get it right unless you're just not thinking about what gear you really need.

Don't worry about it, you would have pulled 5mph off the speed by the time the clutch was fully engaged. It must have felt like slamming the hand brake on.
Also be glad you have a normal gearbox that allows 1st to be engaged while the car is moving and not a crash 1st gear where you need to stop or double clutch that many claim to have.

I was teaching my girlfriend to drive in the 60's in my Wolseley 1500.
Coming up to a left turn I said change into 2nd. Somehow and I have never figured out how, she selected reverse without so much as a crunch because when she let the clutch out the car just slowed down fast and smoothly reversed back around the corner.
I've accidently touched reverse many times but you instantly know from the feel and start of the noise what you've done. Very strange that car did that with no ill effects, apart from me going off at the time.

It was an accident and he didn't force it, the gearbox just selected 1st as it's designed to do.

It makes no sense to me, how can you casually go into 1st from 4th+ at said speed? It requires quite the effort.

I think if it had resisted or made any noise he would have realised and pulled back to neutral. Same as I have going from a 6 speed to a 5 speed and shifting into 6th to find reverse instead.

The ones having problems getting into 1st while it's moving should just start using it a few times to free it up or take it into the dealer to find out whats wrong.
They don't put triple syncros on a gear that's not designed to be selected on the move.

You have no problem shifting into 1st from forth at 40 mph? without double clutching? That's what you are pretty much saying!

I'm not saying it's impossible, you really have to shove it in there and that put un-needed pressure on the fork.

For me at 40mph I cant shift into 1st gear without slamming it in. I've gone from 6th to 3rd a couple time when downshifting into 5th, although I feel it immediately before the clutch is halfway out and just shift back into the rightful gear.
