Don't people get reliable 250-300 whp out of our stock trans with FI? Because if so, I would much rather keep the stock transmission since S2K transmissions aren't exactly cheap. I'm not necessarily looking for 700 whp with this swap.

I think the s2000 transmission you can for less than 1k with less than 50k on it. K24 is a couple grand. The 86 transmission is not cheap by any means a lot more than a S2000 transmission. I think it’s a win across the board IMO for this swap.

I think you might be confused. A used 86 transmission is about the same $500 as a S2000 transmission. Maybe a built 86 transmission to match the s2000’s strength would make it more expensive.

But I already HAVE an 86 transmission in my 86. I wouldn't have to buy another part.

You would need an adapter plate to mount the 86 transmission to a k24 engine. The adapter plate will cost more than an s2000 transmission. I don't even think Pure would make money from making/selling such an adapter (pure speculation).

You would also need an adapter plate for the K24 to S2000 transmission.

K series to S2000 adapter plates already exist: http://www.balladesports.com/product...-adapter-plate

Unfortunately, I have no clue if that is a quality part. I do know that there have been K-swapped S2000's, which leads me to believe that there are many existing parts we can take advantage of with that engine/trans combo.

Edit: I hope I'm not discouraging anyone from going this route. I've been saving for an LS swap, but a K24 swap is more affordable!

That adaptor is inexpensive, so there should be no reason to assume an adaptor from K to our transmission would be expensive either. In fact, K-Miata has an adaptor for K series to Miata transmission and is also in a similar price range.

This swap seems like a configuration I wanted from the factory. When I heard about it, I imagined a legendary STI transmission, and a sweet Toyota build like the 3sGTE OR 2ZZ. I still love our car, but I had to admit it felt backwards. I get why they did it though... Can't wait to see this swap get popular

Legendary STI transmission with a straight four??? If everyone is complaining about the FA20 being too far forward then that configuration would really put everyone off. Imagine adding two more cylinders to the front of an STI.

This swap butts the rear of the motor right next to the firewall, yet the motor sits about the same distance forward as the FA20 (no real savings there). The STI/WRX/etc have the transmission inline with the front wheels to have symmetrical AWD. See below:

To be honest I'm not concerned with the weight distribution, I like in-line engines better, that's all.

Here's a disgusting amount of details regarding the K-series: https://www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=53589

**disclaimer- I have never rebuilt an engine, the most of I've done is clutch replacement. I used this site as a reference: https://www.realstreetperformance.co...d-buyers-guide. The numbers below are from googling**

It looks like 5-6k for a junker engine/transmission AND internal upgrades, if you do most of the work yourself. This is the route I'm taking. I'm still waiting on Pure's engine management alternative to Motec, otherwise, add $5k+ for Motec:

$800 - junker K24a2 (engine/acc/ecu/harness)

$800 - AP2 transmission
$500 - forged pistons
$500 - forged rods
$1000 - camshaft
$650 - valvetrain kit
$160 - ARP studs
$50 - Main bearings
$50 - Rod bearings
$600 - S2000 oil pump (recommended for redline about 8500 rpm)
$60 - Lower timing chain guide (keeps timing chain from jumping)
$100 - steel head gasket
$11 - exhaust/intake valve seals
$1000(?) - head inspection/machining
$1000 (opt) - Ferrea rockers (might be needed for 9000rpm+ redline?)
$230 (opt) - crank timing gear upgrade (https://www.kseriesparts.com/DCI-CTG.html)
$360 (opt) - Balance damper

Any corrections, opinions or criticisms are welcomed. Keep this thread alive!

No K20 head? It was my understanding that all the 250Fwhp+ k24 swaps run the k20/k24 combo.
